The Greatest Gift in Love is Love!

Bertha Mayes, affectionately known as granny, granny granny, Berta Mae, and Bun lived a full life of spunk, love, grit, passion, and fun. We were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from Bertha during her 72 years; like how to cook the best pot roast, how to be respectful while still speaking your mind, and how to take care of your family. We are certain that Bertha will continue to be the best at poker and watch her beloved channels, Discovery and HGTV on her new mission.

Bertha was born December 23, 1948, in a small county in Jackson, MS to Ester and Margaret Taylor. Bertha cherished and loved her nine siblings, Margaret, Ester Jr., Eddie, Minnie Lou, Peggy, Betty Jean, Barbara, Joyce, and Russell (Tamara).

Her career path as a young adult took her to the United States Postal Service. After many years with the USPS, she went on to work several other jobs before her tenure at Bubbleland Laundry. She was a hard worker, so much so, her family had to beg her to retire. Retiring wasn’t easy for Bertha. She enjoyed staying active and meeting new people.

Bertha married Leonard Mayes in 1964 and they made their home in Chicago, IL. Chicago is where Bertha established many meaningful relationships. Bertha was a bright light in this world, having an impact on everyone she met. She had the gift of hospitality, always making everyone who entered her home feel welcome.

Left to carry on her legacy are her four children, Tina, Katherine, Maine (Roberta), and Karl (Marla). Bertha shared colorful memories with her thirteen grandchildren, Derek (Stephanie), Alice (Craig), DeAndre, Nekedia (Oliver), Daffney (Vincent), Derris, Michael, Diana, Andre, DeMarrea (Kyeisha), Nakayla, Jalen and Javon. Bertha had a sweet spot for her eleven great-grandchildren Aniyah, Jayla, Elijah, Tripp, Logan, Aiden, Nivea, Parker, Kario, Noah, and Bella.

Bertha was well-known and loved by everyone. There is no doubt that her large extended family including many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and her lifelong friend, Gloria will keep her memories alive.
