Forever in Our Hearts

Bernard Pearce, known to most as Bernie, passed away peacefully in his sleep after a 9 year battle with throat cancer, at the age of 68.  Bernie leaves behind his two daughters, Jenifer (Jenna) and Wendy, as well as his four grandchildren, Alicia, Leland, Llyr, and Sakira.

Bernie had a magnetic personality and if you weren't lucky enough to call him a friend, you might say he was, "quite the character!" Bernie loved to spend time with his friends and was seldom alone. Bernie welcomed everyone in, and would always help someone in need, friend and stranger alike. He was always on the go, fixing vehicles, machines, or computers, or working on projects - he liked to keep busy.

Bernie will be deeply missed by his boys, and by his family. Poetically, Bernie was cremated on Father's Day - which also happened to be a Sunday. Some of his ashes went to his mother's gravesite, some went to his daughters, and some to a dear friend to take up to their favorite fishing spot.

The family declined to do a service, as he always said he never wanted a sad gathering at a funeral home (fuck that!), and hoped his friends would have a laugh and a drink to cheers in his honor. So, the family asked his friends to have a party for him at his house and share fond memories, which was promptly done the day after he died. However, this meeting was only among his closest friends, so the family wanted to provide a way for you all to share your condolences or sentiments here.

Please share a memory, a story, or something you'd like to remember about Bernie.

You don't need to censor your posts with language or topic (come on, we all know Bernie!), but you can write as a "Guest" if you prefer to be anonymous. These memories are a way to honor and remember him, and to discover more about his life so we may find comfort knowing he was well loved. We hope you can share some rich tales!

Bernie was a wonderful man, always kind and welcoming. So very sad to hear of his passing. He spoke of his daughters, whom he odviously adored, with so much passion. He was a great person. He will be missed.

It is not easy to write something considering bernie was such a great friend to all of us. I spent many days over hanging out with him. I would know when I was awake because his blinds was open. Then when I would go over he would say I seen my boy in the window. Which is my cat duncon. I would say bernies up and he would jump up to the window. I remember one day when he had his white truck he had a ramp to load his ski-doo into his truck. That did not work to well . He started his ski-doo and the throttle was stuck so off the ramp it went and off the ski-doo bernie went he was ok though. And we had many laughs about the matter. RIP my friend until we meet again

One of my favorite memories of my dad is when he took me fishing on Kirk Lake when I was 8. It is in picturesque Northern Ontario, and the lake was tranquil and the forest thick. We went a fair bit out and settled in for a bit. Wouldn't you know it- I skunked him not once but twice!!! My first "reel" time fishing and I caught 2!! He was so proud- and then came the learning how to gut part.

I have been trying to focus on the positive memories of my dad, and remember the valuable things he taught me. My father's profession was long-haul trucking, for as long as he body would allow him to do it, and maybe even longer. Driving was his passion. I accompanied him on many cross country trips. He taught me how to shift a big rig with a switch when I was barely taller than it. I got to look in the big atlas and find the best route to the place we were going. My dad even humored me by going the way I suggested, even if it wasn't off course, so I could learn by doing - and then fixing my mistake by getting us back n track. I found I employ this kind of methodology for teaching in my own class - I always give my students the opportunity to try first alone. Not until they've made an attempt will I reveal the answer and allow them to correct their mistakes. I thought this was a Montessori approach and it wasn't until writing this I realized I picked it up from my dad.
