I first met Bernard in the mid 80's when we were working on the same experiment at Optical Sciences. We hit it off immediately. Bernard ended up teaching me a lot of optics and we used to run the Par Course and play racquetball on campus. He gave me shit for his entire life for causing him to have a grey spot in his vision when we were working together with a high power laser and a mirror accidentally came loose and shined on his retina. We went on an incredible trip to Libya with a nice group for a solar eclipse in 2006. He also was one of the few who visited me in Bangkok when I was teaching over there. 2 years ago we went on a wonderful 4-wheeling camping trip to Canyonlands in Utah. He and I and Art went on many day hikes in Tucson the past 5 years since I moved back. The last quality time we had together was last August when the 2 of us went up to Cortez to work on the house and do some archeoastronomy. We had a blast. Gonna miss him.

I met Bernard & Linda around 1975 or 76. He was an "old guy" in his mid twenties turning to astronomy & physics. Just a couple things.... We did an off-road trip (with Ed Beshore) on our BMWs from Dripping Springs wash over Pinal Peak. At one point we asked a rancher what the route was… he pointed across the pasture to a gate & asked we close it behind us. It turned into little more than a hiking trail. Near the top we ran perhaps 50 yards up steep bare rock faster than prudent. Being first gear it was as slow as we could go. Stopping risked sliding back. When we finally reached a 4WD road with, some dune buggies stopped to look at the fools who'd just come up the trail on road bikes with saddlebags. During grad school @OSC we started rock climbing. We could leave OSC and be at the north end of Campbell in ten minutes, geared up climbing a couple minutes later. We'd shared the cost of a hemp rope for practice, bowline on a bight and I'll not describe our belay techniques. Linda would often bring Pearl. We belayed Pearl by holding onto the back of her coveralls. On a camping trip he demonstrated the zither (different from the musical one he built). We spent a few hours at the Drake building looking over the meteorite collection a few years back. Looking through a few boxes it seems he knew some geology:-). I keep recalling little incidents like that… I expect that'll continue. I find myself driving slower in the right lane as the years go by. I will be even more attentive from now on.

Bernard was one of a kind - always smiling and always fun to be around. I will miss our hikes together, bike-rides and just shooting the breeze with him about virtually anything. I know his family will cherish many wonderful memories with him; I certainly will!
