Bernabe Cenal has been surfing the beaches of heaven since the Lord called him home on May 12, 2020.

He has touched and influenced countless lives during his time on earth. Sergeant First Class in the United States Army, Bernabe served in the Korean War from May - August, 1962, as the non-commissioned officer in charge of medical records. He was a proud member of the Wolfhounds, and served in the Vietnam War from January - December, 1966, as the medical platoon sergeant.

A highly respected respiratory therapist, Bernabe cared for patients at the Kauikeolani Children’s Hospital, Kapiolani Hospital, and Pali Momi Medical Center. Upon his retirement, Bernie continued to share his expertise through respiratory therapy home care.

An avid lover of the ocean, Bernabe found joy in water sports, especially surfing, fishing, and diving. He took pride in his ability to carve hooks from bone and wood, and create jewelry from ‘opihi shells. Playing the ‘ukulele was also his favorite pastime, as well as singing and listening to Hawaiian music.

Bernabe was extremely devoted to his family, and is remembered fondly for his giving spirit, selflessness, simplicity in living, intelligence, and humorous wisdom.

Bernabe was predeceased by his son Owen and his grandson Keali'i. He is survived by his wife Sharon, brothers Bruno, Pete, and Billy, sister Violet, sons Keith, Milo, Maurice, and Francis, daughters Helene, Traci, and Joy. He lives on in the hearts of numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, who lovingly call him “Poompa.”

Dear family, it is hard to believe that Uncle Bernie, has passed on more than a year ago. I treasure time spent with Uncle Bernie, Auntie Sharon and cousins Joy and Tracy, and families, whether in Hawaii or in Canada. Uncle had a way of bringing magic to life, deeply expressing culture and love of family and friends. The last time I was in Hawaii, 2007, Uncle gave me "A Little Book of Aloha, Hawaiian Proverbs & Inspirational Wisdom". This quote from the book reminds me of how Uncle Bernie shared his love of life, "Love is like a bird, there is no branch it does not perch upon." May you rest in love and peace Uncle Bernie, with great respect and love, niece Leslee.

I’ve only shared a day with Sharon and Bernie but he was a man we immediately liked. They toured us around and showed us a Hawaii we would never have seen. He was joyous, thoughtful, kind and made my friend, Sharon, happy. I’m so sorry, Sharon, but I’m sure he is very happy in heaven.

Uncle Bernie lives on in my heart too. I have great memories of being with him on his beloved beaches when I visited the Hawaiian Islands many years ago. He and Auntie Sharon were gracious hosts and tour guides taking us to many places and showing us Oahu's natural beauty. They introduced us to Leleiha bakery too! I also have many fond memories of their visits to Canada and all the family celebrations we shared. Uncle Bernie and his ukulele were always a highlight. My heartfelt prayers goes out to all those that loved Bernie.
