Farewell, sweet boy.  We love and miss you dearly.

Ben had a happy childhood growing up in Beaverton, Oregon with his three siblings, Alex, Catherine, and Christina and his parents Cindy and Kent.  He enjoyed a range of sports, with baseball his favorite of team sports. Later, he focused his athletic talents on skateboarding, a real source of pride.

He graduated from an early college program that combined two years of college with high school graduation, setting an example that his sisters soon followed. He later attended Oregon State and Portland State Universities, signing up again for classes just last year as he sought to extend his career in social work.

Ben loved to help people.  His motto on social media was "Trying to do good."  He lit up when he spoke about helping people overcome their troubles in his work with Transition Projects in downtown Portland. He also enjoyed working with others from different backgrounds across a range of jobs.  Besides the social work that he particularly loved, he painted houses, was a strong salesman, and worked in medical administration, among other roles.

He was a big music fan, especially hip hop, and he was a talented amateur freestyler himself.  More recently, he also enjoyed jazz fusion. He was also a student of history, frequently starting conversations about historical questions.  He also loved animals and nature and had pet cats most of his life.

Ben was a vibrant and loyal man who deeply loved and cared about his family, friends, community, and the world as a whole. Sadly, he faced tough challenges, struggling with mental health much of his life.  While this wore down some of his vibrancy, he never gave up and the last trip he took was in pursuit of a better life.

Farewell, sweet boy.  We all love and miss you dearly.

I worked with Ben in the Day Center at TPI. He then moved up to a shelter RA working with Veteran and civilian men whose lives were in a challenging place. Everyone loved Ben! He was easy to talk to, positive and never had a hard time engaging in conversation with anyone. Always quick to help and reliable. As life does, we went in different professional paths and I lost contact with Ben. When I heard the news today my heart sank and I am deeply saddened we lost a good friend and brother. Obviously Ben made lasting impressions on people and he will be truly missed. Good bye my friend, rest in peace.

For Thanksgiving 2019 my boyfriend and I brought his 2 sons, Finnian and Kailynd (8 and 11 at the time), to my mom's house for Thanksgiving. Ben and Kailynd played chess in the living room together which is something they both loved. We took this photo of the chess game when it got cut short, expecting we would be able to continue it sometime. Between the pandemic and Ben's difficulty with his mental health they never got the chance to finish it, but it's a memory I'll cherish forever.

Ben's mystical journey in search of spiritual truth is now over and I trust he found the answers he was looking for. I commend Ben to the grace, mercy and love of God and I wish him peace and healing forever. I love and miss you Ben for now and always-Mom ❣️

I remember when Alex, Ben and Catherine were small (before Christina was born) that Ben’s adventurous spirit would get him running at high speed about their small home (often in pursuit of Alex). Since he had crashed into the wall on several occasions, Cindy said that she had started to have him wear a bike helmet. We both laughed as he ran about the house with a giant mushroom-shaped bike helmet upon his head for safety. It was so cute! It didn’t seem to discourage Ben in the slightest…. and the race was on….. again.

When we were little, Ben came up with quite the clever scheme. He jumped the fence into our neighbor's, the Sandows', yard to grab some Mr. Freeze popsicles out of their garage freezer. He enlisted Christina and I to make some runs as well
