Chapel Hill, NC - Barbara Pierce Thomas, 98, passed away on July 10, 2019 at the DuBose Health Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She was born in Titusville, PA, the second of four children to Stanley and Ludmilla Pierce. The family moved to the Bay Area when the children were young, and all adopted California as their home. Barbara married Ronald Anderson in 1938. She graduated from Stanford University in 1942. Their daughter, Joan, was born in 1943. The couple divorced in 1945. Barbara married James Thomas in 1947, with whom she had three children, Teresa, Christina, and James. She held jobs as an administrative assistant in Los Altos public schools and at two travel agencies. Her favorite job was in the Los Altos High School tutorial center. Barbara started a hiking group of about 25 people called the Boonie Stompers. They would hike together on the peninsula monthly. Barbara is survived by her four children, Joan Rohlfs of North Bethesda, MD, Teresa Cooke of Greensboro, NC, Christina Thomas of Spokane, WA, James C. Thomas of Chapel Hill, NC; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Redwood groves were one of Barbara's greatest loves. Memorial contributions can be made to the Sempervirens Fund at https://sempervirens.org/.

Who could ever forget Aunt Barbara's annual "Christmas Sing?" It was The family event of the year, and I always so looked forward to being in her home at Christmastime, surrounded by parents, brothers, sisters, uncles, cousins, and friends. In later years, even my own children so loved coming to Aunt Barbara's for the famous "Sing" every year at Christmas. There the was good food and all kinds of treats on every table in the house, it seemed. And how we sang! It marked an era all by itself.

A gift is made to the Sempervirens Fund on behalf of my mother, Patricia Pierce Fewel, in memory of her beloved sister Barbara, and their shared love of California's lovely and majestic Redwood forests. We miss Aunt Barbara's earthly presence, yet, we hope in the resurrection to come, and a longed-for reunion in a happy eternity.

When Aunt Barbara and Uncle Jim were still living in Mtn. View, I used to spend a lot of my free time at the local cable access station, KMVT, where I would make local news cable-casts and public service announcements for local cable customers within the greater metropolitan Mountain View city limits. There was a golfing event coming up, and I enlisted Aunt Barbara and Uncle Jim to help me tape a PSA, in which they drove around the Shoreline Golf links in a golf cart in the background of the shot, while I stood in front of the camera doing my best impression of a TV news reporter. Aunt Barbara was as enthusiastic for our little project as if we were going on real, broadcast Television and I was Dave McElhatton himself. She was always bright, smiling, interested in everything little thing about our family and how all the children were doing, generous, and giving. I will always remember and treasure this and many more happy memories of my Aunt Barbara.
