Barbara Jean Swanson Fanslow, beloved mother of Geoffrey and twin daughters Annette and Andrea, passed away on January 22, 2021, at the age of 95.

She was born on July 28, 1925, in Wheaton, Illinois to Grace and Earl Swanson.  She was raised in Elmhurst, Illinois with her three younger siblings: Earl, Elizabeth, and Grace.  Barb graduated from Elmhurst College and moved to California in 1949 where she married George Fanslow, also from Elmhurst.

They moved to Novato, California in the mid-1950s and resided there for 20 years. They had children: George Geoffrey, and daughters Annette and Andrea.  Barb loved her 3 children and 20 total grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Geoffrey and his first wife Angelika had 4 children: Caroline, Rita, Ursula, and Stefan. Annette and former husband Joel Inglish had 3 daughters: Audra, Molly, and Juliana. Andrea and her at-the-time husband Lester Perry had 2 daughters: Amy and Jennifer. Other surviving family members are a sister Elizabeth McGinnity (“Sis”), cousins Judy Burke Robinson, Allen Burke, and Helen Dunbar. Barb is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Barb‘s working career took her to several secretarial positions: Swedish Cruise Lines in Chicago, McDonald Douglas Aviation in Los Angeles, and the Presbyterian Church on 5th Street in San Rafael. Music, however always held a special place in her heart and after learning the piano and organ in high school, she played on Sunday mornings at the Christian Science Church and the Congregational Church in Elmhurst, which paid for her college education. As an accomplished organist and pianist, with a love of J.S. Bach, Barb continued playing the organ after moving to Marin County at the First Congregational Church of San Rafael. She taught many kids in the community to play piano, sew and cook.  She volunteered at a local school in the special education classes.  She was director of the Pobble Gift Shop in Novato which sold items made by the handicapped.  Barb was involved with the local Peace Group of the UCC church in the ’80s.  She protested the nuclear proliferation in Livermore, was arrested, put on the FBI’s watchlist, and later wrote a collective book called, “Listen to my Heart Song”.

Upon retirement, Barb and George designed and built their solar home in Sebastopol, CA. They loved organic gardening and hiking the Sierra Nevada mountains together. Books, libraries, and learning were some of her happiest pastimes. Her love of learning extended to Japanese painting, calligraphy, copper and brass sculpting, mycology, astronomy, drawing, water coloring, silk painting, tailoring, and even braille. Barb will be remembered for all those things but mostly as a loving, accepting, and wonderful mother, grandmother, cousin, and friend.

Barbara lived a full life loving her family, friends, and the community.  Always with a helping and loving hand to others.  Barb was a remarkable woman with so many qualities.  She spoke with love and intelligence, but most of all she demonstrated and walked with a tender and giving heart always! She leaves a legacy of life, love, and growth. Her spirit is within us and lives on through each of us.

Andrea, Annette, and Geoff, I am so sorry for your loss and thankful that you mailed the announcement to me. What an amazing woman your Mother was. The last time I saw her was in 1990, I think, when I traveled to Elmhurst to care for Olga for a week when Barb and George traveled to a US Marine Corp WWII reunion. Barb had sewn a lovely shirtwaist dress in vibrant blue which fitted her so nicely. She was always so kind and graceful. I had hoped to share photos of her here, but they are with my Mother at her facility which is still in lockdown because of Covid.

Barbara and George were my friends and neighbors in Sebastopol for 14 years. I visited Barb often, and always loved listening to the many stories about her life, family members, and talking about our shared interest in art and nature. In her kind and gentle way, Barb brought so much joy to others. Sending my condolences and love to her family.

Here is the Remembrance we shared at Community Church of Sebastopol (see below) and a photo from a former church directory. Our hearts are with you. Warmly, Pastor Rachel Dear Friends in Christ, It is with a heavy heart that I write to let you know that former church member Barbara Fanslow has died, at the age of 95. She had moved up to Tacoma, Washington to be near family, but was a longtime Sebastopol resident and church member. In the 1980s, Barbara was committed to nuclear disarmament, even being arrested at a protest at Livermore Lab, and participated in our congregation’s Peace & Justice Team (now known as Mission & Outreach). She loved the work of gardening, canning, and homesteading, and sometimes played in worship as substitute organist. Here is an excerpt from her obituary: “Barbara lived a full life loving her family, friends, and the community, with a loving and helping hand to others. Barbara was a remarkable woman with so many qualities. She spoke with love and intelligence, but most of all, she demonstrated and walked with a tender and giving heart always! She leaves a legacy of life, love, and growth. Her spirit is within us and lives on through each of us.” I know Barbara touched many lives, both as an activist and a dear friend to those in our church community. If you feel like reaching out to share a story with me about Barbara, I’d love to hear it. And, please don’t hesitate to reach out if I might be of spiritual support to you as you process this loss. I invite you to hold Barbara’s family in prayer as they grieve her passing. She will be missed. Warmly, Pastor Rachel A prayer lifting up the life of Barbara Jean Swanson Fanslow Let us pray: God of all comfort, we lift up the life of Barbara Jean Swanson Fanslow with thanksgiving. We praise you for your steadfast love for her all the days of her earthly life, and we thank you for all that she was to those who loved her. Through the years, Barbara was a friend to many, gentle and kind-hearted, committed to standing up for peace. Thank you for the relationships she nourished, both in our church community and beyond. We will miss her because she loved nature and art. We will miss her because she is the kind of person who stood on street corners to promote the cause of peace. We will miss her because she loved these words from Mahatma Gandhi: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” We will miss her. Holy One, we thank you that for Barbara, all suffering has passed and she has been gathered into you. We ask your blessing on her family as they grieve her loss, especially in this time when gathering to mourn can be challenging. And we, as her church family for so many years, ask you to step quietly into the ordinary moments when we feel Barbara’s absence the deepest. For the love of Christ passes all human understanding; for by death Christ has conquered death, and by rising Christ has opened to all of us the gates of everlasting life. Thanks be to you, O God. Amen.
