Loved Ones

Austin was the kind of person who would stop on the highway to help people with a flat tire; he was always there for friends–and even strangers–he found in need. He flew around the country to help friends recover from surgeries, working remotely. He registered himself as a minister so that he could officiate at the wedding of many of his friends, including some of the early LGBTQ+ marriages in Oregon. Austin’s circle of friends was broad, and his escapades crossed oceans.

He loved the outdoors, and spent many days hiking up into forests to clear his mind. The beginning of COVID saw him embark on a full year of running at least a mile, every single day. He sought to improve his mind as an avid meditator. You could often find him engaged in vigorous debates about the issues of the times; he held quite strong opinions. Constantly learning, he taught himself many different skills, including how to play the ukulele (he had many of them), and French by reading Harry Potter In translation. He always wanted to be an inventor and an entrepreneur, running his own company, but unfortunately was never quite able to find the time to make this a reality. He had a dry sense of humor, at one point connecting a set of Christmas chimes into his doorbell and reprogramming them to play the Harry Potter theme (you will hear it if you visit his house), and populating his new Auxiliary Dwelling Unit with a range of strange and wonderful items.

Austin graduated from Lane Community College with an Associates Degree. He was a founder and co-owner of The Habit coffee shop in Portland, Oregon.  He moved up through the ranks at a range of companies, including Teleport Internet Services, CollegeNet, Global Crossing, and Autodesk, becoming an accomplished and widely respected senior network engineer.

Austin is survived by his two beloved children Raina and Ci Ci, the centers of his life, as well as by his brother, Aaron, and his father, Bob. His mother, Gretchen, and his other brother, Jeremy, passed away many years ago.

I heard about this great 'Austin guy' for years from my best friend, Julie. I finally got to meet him in person a couple of years ago and it was like meeting an old friend. Austin had the kindest, most gentle, most real vibe of anyone I had ever met. When he talked to you, he heard you. When he smiled, you smiled. In the short time I knew him, we had several deep, meaningful conversations and we had tons of laughs. I am a far better person for having Austin in my life. He will always have a piece of my heart, and I will always carry him with me.

I have so many things to say. They won't be a surprise for others to read. Austin meant so much to so many people. He was the most caring, humble, feeling , genuine human being. I'm grateful to be able to say I got to spend over 30 years with you!! I'll be back when I get my wits about me.

When I was 16 years old, my dad decided to remarry. Along with my step family, I inherited Austin. I met him and my brother, JJ, for the first time when I was 16 years old. Our time was spent throwing around a frisbee and getting to know each other. Austin has been a staple in my life ever since. He has been an honorary uncle to my children, an adventure buddy, and a constant supporter of every idea and goal that I have. He encouraged me, as he did so many others. It is heartwarming to read how special he treated everyone. I have so many lovely memories of him. When we would go camping, he always kept my fire going. He would bring me coffee whenever we spent mornings together. He encouraged me to try new things and was horrified when I told him I'd never tried eggs Benedict. He rectified that immediately by taking me to one of his favorite breakfast places. He was right, it was delicious. One of my favorite memories was about 6 years ago. My mom and I were visiting my brother in Portland. Late into the night and after a long day of working, my brother and I took my mom to a bar to relax and unwind. I tagged the location on social media and within 15 minutes, Austin had arrived to join us. We spent the evening drinking, debating, and laughing. His company was always welcome. I miss it terribly. Austin was the friend I aspire to be. His heart readily joined those in happiness and sorrow. His hugs melted the most difficult of feelings and his soul resonated with everyone he met. Austin, thank you for sharing your heart and soul with me. I am forever grateful and I love you dearly.

I am going to miss you, my friend. You were my companion for 35 years. Marriages, strokes, heart surgeries, divorce, kids, businesses, ruined furniture, political arguments, rum, camping, hikes, weddings, running, fambily breakfasts, houses, computers. Coffee. You and I both understood our imperfections, and you taught me the road to compassion and how important it is to be happy for the success of others. I love you. You will not be forgotten.
