Ashwani Kumar Bansal
April 29th, 2021
April 29th, 2021
It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Dr. Ashwani Kumar Bansal on April 29, 2021, at the age of 69 in Delhi following a valiant battle with Covid-19 during the humanitarian crisis in India.
Ashwani was born in Ludhiana, Punjab, to Suphal Mala and Jagwant Rai Bansal. He is survived by his loving wife, Kalpana; brother, Anil; and sisters, Sanju Aggarwal and Dr. Anupam Gupta. He is preceded in death by his elder sister Dr. Manju Gopal. He was a loving brother-in-law to Dr. Raj Gopal, Dr. Tejinder Gupta, Sudershan Aggarwal, and Amita Bansal. Although he did not have children of his own, he was a father figure to many, including his nieces, nephews and students. He will be greatly missed by his nieces, Nidhi, Monica, Sonia, Tanu, Natasha, Neha; his nephews, Nitin and Ankur; as well as his extended family, colleagues, friends, and students whom he continued to mentor, challenge and guide even after his retirement.
Ashwani was a brilliant lawyer and academician with many accolades, but he lived a simple life and was a humble humanitarian. He was honest and selfless, and continually fought for justice in all spheres of life. His energy and perseverance enabled him to accomplish anything he set his mind to.
He completed his law degree and then PhD in an astonishing year and a half at Delhi University. He rooted himself in Delhi and devoted his life to academia and the law to realize his vision for a better India. He was a pioneer in the field of Intellectual Property Rights in India and has authored several textbooks on the subject.
He became a law professor and then Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi. He taught with enthusiasm and was a role model to his students. His home always had an open door and he welcomed anyone with his favorite snacks - samosas, rasgullas and chai - in his eagerness to listen, challenge and learn.
After his career as Dean, he took on an ambitious endeavor and became Vice Chancellor of two universities at the same time: Maharaja Surajmal Brij University (MSB), Bharatpur, RJ, and Raj Rishi Bhartrihari Matsya University, Alwar, RJ. In 2018, true to his life calling, he established two programs at MSB - a Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Law, and a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Law. He also started the MSB Global Law Journal in 2018, which focuses on legal issues and implications supporting social welfare programs; a testament to his compassion for everyone and humanitarianism.
Ashwani always spoke openly and truthfully, and as such, he may have offended some, but he was sincere and revered so people would listen and follow. There was an endless stream of love behind all his actions and verbal or written conversations. His altruism and forthrightness garnered him immense respect and were qualities which endeared him to everyone, including his opponents.
Despite his passion for his career and hectic lifestyle, he still made time for his nieces and nephews and always took an interest in their careers and lives. He made enduring friendships with Dr. Arvind/Anita and Nanak/Prem. His friends became his family. Kalpana was not only his wife, she was his best friend. She was the center of his life and he loved her more than himself, which was evident even in his final week.
He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him. He was a man of courage with a beautiful mind and a heart of gold. May his Soul attain Moksha.

On 5th Death Anniversary of Brother Ashwani Kumar Bansal 29 Apr 2026 Baruat Kutumb especially the younger generation, We are all proud of our lineage. It is truly inspiring to see multi-generational commitment to education in our family. The legacy of Lala Hardhiyan Singh Jain (our mom's father) and his grandson (daughter Suphal Mala's son), Dr Ashwani Kumar Bansal reflect a remarkable contribution to the academic landscape of India. Digambar Jain College, Baraut: was founded in 1943 by grandfather Lala Hardhiyan Singh Jain & maternal uncle Jagdish Parshad Jain to provide quality higher education. (1st Picture attached.) Maharaja Surajmal Brij University (MSBU), Bharatpur: This state university was established in 2012 in a very small building. Professor Ashwani Kumar Bansal served as its Vice Chancellor from Feb 2017 - Feb 2021. The new campus building founded by Ashwani is his baby but its inauguration was done by Chief Minister Galhot in Feb 2022 after Ashwani passed away. (picture #2) (youtube New MSBU Campus Bldg link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zc_ASnTi1_g) VC Ashwani Kumar Bansal in his three years tenure turned MSBU in a Global Univ. (Pic#3) MSBU held its first convocation (youtube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7Ou8XRwXAE) Grandson Ashwani's leadership at the university level directly echoes the foundational work grandfather did in Baraut. VC Professor Ramesh Chandra honoured Ashwani by establishing Professor Ashwani Kumar Bansal Memorial Park at the new campus on 17 Mar 2025. It is similar to naming of Baraut Sabji Mandi in Jagdish Parshad Mama Ji's name by Baraut Residents. Legacy of Lala Hardhyan Singh Jain carried by his grandson Ashwani Kumar Bansal is truly remarkable & to be proud of!!

Dear Family, On 29 Apr 2026 on 5th Death Anniversary of my Brother Ashwani, My dear Brother Ashwani in Heaven, it has been five years since you left this world where we could see you, talk with you, hug you, argue with you, travel with you & enjoy the moments being in your company. Brother, Your death does not erase the life you lived and the memories you created with your family, students, colleagues and with your like minded people. In my opinion what all of us have once enjoyed deeply, it becomes a part of us. No one can ever lose it. It seems those we love never truly leave us. They live by our side in our hearts. I now believe memories are such a thing that even death can't touch. My brother in Heaven, I keep in touch with so many of your students & colleagues. Ashwani, you didn't have children but your students were like your children. When I correspond with them it feels as if I am talking with you & your family. Tum jatey jatey apni nalayak behan ko apna parivar de gai. Your Mentor, Padma Shri Dr Upendra Baxi, treats me like a younger sister. Ashwani, his Alvida Note at Delhi Univ Condolence gathering told me and Anu that nobody knew you better than him. He knew your soul. Present VC Dr Ramesh Chandra named a park at Bhartpur Univ in your name. Dr Baxi was really happy with Dr Chandra's action. He wrote to me, "Ramesh has taken this great step forward. Ash deserves many memorials. We miss him a lot". Brother, your brilliant sister, Anupam, has successfully established a Gold Medal in Delhi Univ Law faculty. 1st Gold Medal was given on 28 Feb 2026 to Monika Merthia. Folks, even after 5 years following heart wrenching tribute written by Mr. Parshant Singh (Deputy Registrar MSBU) for his mentor VC Ashwani Kumar Bansal is never gone from my mind. Sharing with you. After reading the above tribute I looked up Prashant at MSBU Bhartpur site. Now here and there he sends me little anecdotes from Ashwani's life. One day I sent him a para from Greek Philosopher on friendship with a comment, "you came in my mind as you have that quality to see who your well wisher is. You walk in Greek Philosopher's thoughts. "Know how to listen, and you will profit from those who talk badly". Plutarch, a philosopher from nearly two thousand years ago, distinguished true friendship from mere agreement. He argued that genuine friends challenge us, fostering growth by offering honest disagreement and independent thought. This ancient wisdom remains relevant today, urging us to seek connections that push us to confront our blind spots rather than simply echo our views. “Know how to listen, and you will profit even from those who talk badly.” Now read a little anecdote from Parshant that may bring smiles even on this sad day of Ashwani's death anniversary: "Prof. Ashwani Bansal deserved more life. He was a workaholic and could not rest at home. Perhaps his inability to work during Covid restrictions made him vulnerable. I felt that he had a personal bond with me as he visited my home 3-4 times without prior notice or informing me. Once I was sleeping and my maa tapped my head saying "प्रशान्त, देख तू सो रहा है! देख तेरे सर आए हैं घर, उठ जल्दी।" And I pinged from my bed as if I had seen a bhoot in dreams. जबतक वो तू कह कर बोलते थे मैं निश्चिंत रहता था। जब भी उन्होंने 'आप या देखिये' कहा, मुझे लग जाता था कि सर आज चीर फाड़ के मूड़ में हैं! 😅 I can try to estimate how much love and affection you have gathered inside your heart for your brother as you would not have skipped a single day without thinking of the departed soul. My family, friends & like minded people of Ashwani, there is an Irish proverb that is befitting for me - Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal". It seems my brother walked ahead of me, making a place for me until we meet again. Dear Addressees, I love you and appreciate you for giving me the shoulder to cry on as I miss my loving brother, Ashwani. Some of you have been like my Guardian Angels, giving me your valuable time, protecting me, comforting me in difficult days & letting me express myself with openness. I just don't know how to stop missing him. "Shared joy is a double joy; shared sorrow is half a sorrow." Sanju

Dr. sunanda bharti, student & later became colleague for her Mentor Prof. Ashwani Bansal on 5th Death Anniversary 29 Apr 2026 From: sunanda.bharti@gmail.com Wed, Apr 29 at 10:18 a.m. We (my entire family, personal and professional) remember Bansal sir fondly. In fact not a day passes when his unique administrative style is not mentioned while talking in professional circles. बंसल sir इस matter को कैसे handle करते—ये एक normal मापदंड है मेरे लिए । Though the ease which he managed things is difficult to emulate, I nonetheless try 🙂🌸 Dr. Sunanda Bharti, Professor IPR and CLE Teacher, Law Centre-I Certified Professional Mediator, IIAM Faculty of Law, University of Delhi Delhi-110007
