A Good Brother, Uncle and Friend to Many
In Loving Memory of Arthur Matthew Holst, Ph.D., of Philadelphia, who passed away peacefully on November 15, 2025, at the age of 68 with his sister by his side. He leaves behind a legacy of intellectual curiosity, civic dedication, and heartfelt generosity. Born to Norman Holst, Sr. and Mary Louise Holst (née Rheaume), Arthur was one of nine siblings in a close-knit family. He graduated from Central High School (234th class) and Temple University, where he earned his doctorate. Twice honored as a Fulbright Scholar, Arthur’s academic achievements took him across continents, fostering global friendships and cultural exchange.
Arthur’s life was rich with adventure and kindness. He traveled the world with an open heart, always ready to lend a hand or share a story. His knack for winning contests—most memorably a brand-new Prius—was matched only by his joy in sharing those wins with others. In Philadelphia, Arthur was a tireless public servant. He served as a Democratic committeeman, Chief of Staff to Phila City Councilman, Director of the Betsy Ross House, Financial Aid director at Temple University and Government Liaison for the Philadelphia Water Department. His colleagues admired his wit, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the city he loved.
Arthur is survived by three brothers - Jerome, Rodger, Stephen - three sisters - Tina, Patrice, Marguerite, and pre-deceased by brother Norman and sister Virginia and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss his humor, intellect, and generous spirit.
In accordance with his wishes, no public service will be held. A private family gathering will honor his memory. To continue Arthur’s legacy of education and service, donations may be made to the Betty Ann Shema Morris Scholarship Fund at Temple University.

Growing up on Fairhill St, the Daleys were the only ‘big family’ on our street. That was until the Holst family moved into the Dyson’s house. When they moved in, six siblings moved in with their Mom and Dad (if i remember correctly). They were all older than me except Steve. It was like acquiring older brothers and sisters for me. I loved hanging out at their house! One of the brothers passed away last night. I want to share how much I owe my successes in returning to school not once but twice to Arthur M Holst. When I went back to at Phila Community College in 1980, I left my job at Olney Federal Savings and Loan. I needed a part-time job that I could fit into my class schedule. Art was working as a financial aid officer at Computer Learning Center. They were looking for a parttime FAO. I got the job and spent the next few years working for CLC eventually becoming Director of Financial Aid and moving into the Education office helping with the students on a different level. I stopped going to school when I became a full time employee. Fast forward to me going back to school in the 90’s! I left a full time job and was waitressing while attending classes at Temple. Once again, Art reached out to me. He was leaving his job as the Financial Aid Officer at the Episcopal Hospital School of Nursing. He wanted to know if I was interested in the job. Of course, I said yes! It was very helpful for me. I spent a lot of time actually studying in my office at the school. 12 or so years ago, I went to meet Art at his brother, Steve and Mariann Holst’s home in NE Phila. It was actually a Holst family gathering! I was able to spend some time with some of my favorite people. I was blessed to have you as a friend. Rest in Peace!

RIP Art. A lot of good memories of late night trips to Chinatown or wandering philly getting into humorous situations. He dealt with a lot of health issues and accomplished more than most healthy people. Hope he is at peace. Cy

Art was a man of many talents, & it is an honor to have met him through the Loughery family. His easy going, unassuming style was quite a contrast to his many accomplishments, all of which made this world a better place for so many! His spirit will continue through all of his good works. May his family & friends be comforted in knowing that he suffers no more, & is surely enjoying eternal peace, so well-deserved. Treasure those many happy memories! With our love, prayers, & deepest condolences - Patsy & John Heimall & family

Bill, thank you for your time and thoughtful consideration for my Uncle Arthur. Your words hold true. One of my earliest memories of my uncle was when he returned from Russia and brought us back Matryoskha dolls. It was a thoughtful souvenir that also showed his love and appreciation of other cultures. Any curiosity and admiration I have for other cultures stems from my relationship with Arthur, still paling greatly in comparison to the passion he displayed. His personal and professional resume confirms that he had a heart geared for service and exploration. It is no surprise that he had friends all over the world, as kindness is universal. Despite all of his interesting stories and impressive feats, his conversations with family were always geared towards the other person, how they were doing, and how he could possibly be of service in helping them with an opportunity that could better their life. I will look back fondly on our conversations at family parties, and the memories shared since birth.
