I had the honor and privilege of teaching with Tony from 1992 until his retirement. Upon the death my own father in 1998, Tony sent me a very caring and deeply moving message that spoke to the enduring presence of ancestors on our lives -in particular a father upon his transition from life to eternal ancestry. Among all of the kind words and condolences received from colleagues and friends during that difficult time, it was Tony's profound empathy and wisdom that has remained indelible in my memory and my soul.

Nearly fifty years ago and before we joined the UW faculty, Tony and I were students at UC, Berkeley. Sometime in the spring of 1971, as I was being questioned by three faculty members during my qualifying examination, a strong smell of incense wafted into the room from the Haviland Hall corridor. Before the exam, Tony had assured me the exam would go well. He would see to it. When one of the examiners opened the door to check on the smell, he found several sticks of incense burning in an empty Coke can. We laughed, the exam continued, and I passed. Tony had come through! A half-century old reminder of this man's generosity of spirit.
