Andrew Carleton

OBITUARY Andrew George Carleton (Drew) passed away of natural causes on August 6, 2024 in Seneca, SC, at the age of 68. Drew was born on March 21, 1956 in Idaho Falls ID, fourth of the six children of Richard Cairncross Carleton and Barbara Marianne Bell Carleton.  The family moved to many places with Drew’s father, a Civil Engineer, following large projects such as dams, pump storage projects, boat building, and projects in Guatemala and the Riyadh Airport in Saudi Arabi.  The children lived in widely varied environments and learned early on how to be expert packers.   Some of the places Drew lived in his youth were Idaho Falls ID, Cougar WA, San Rafael CA, Bellevue WA, Guatemala City, Butteville, OR.  Greenfield MA, Hilton Head SC, Staunton VA, and.   Later, he lived in Clemson SC, Bothell WA, Vashon Island WA, Austin TX, and Taos NM.  He lived in many other places in his life - he could be considered a bit of a nomad. As a child he was very curious about everything around him, especially the natural world.  A very active boy, early walker, climber, and roughhouser, he had no fear in his exploits, including climbing to the top of an old wood water tower at the age of four, much to the chagrin of his mother. Drew graduated from Greenfield High School, MA in 1974 where he excelled in gymnastics, track and field, and soccer.  He graduated from Clemson University with a degree in Environmental Engineering and Science Technology, concentrating on Geology and Biology.  His love of learning was a lifelong pursuit, and he was very hard to beat in the tavern trivia games; you definitely wanted him on your team.  He was especially knowledgeable about rocks and minerals, insects and other fauna and really, just about anything.  Drew was Captain of his rugby team at Clemson, and his teammates became his lifelong friends and were an important part of his life - so many rugby stories.  He continued to play rugby and soccer in the old guy’s leagues in various places.   He had a wicked and sharp sense of humor and was an extraordinary purveyor of puns who could run circles around you in that arena.  He had strong opinions on many subjects and woe to those who thought they could argue against his extremely well spoken and written criticisms. Andrew was a master craftsman who worked in many capacities including building and remodeling houses and constructing theater backgrounds and dance recital sets; a skill he was using at the Okonee Community theater at the time of his death.  He could fix or build just about anything and taught his sons the value of spending extra time building a foundation and framing perfectly, so the rest of the construction and finish work proceeded quickly and smoothly.  He learned how to operate major heavy equipment working with his father.   Drew was also a community thespian playing among other roles Bill Sykes in Oliver and Scrooge in Christmas Carol.  One of the last places he lived was in Taos NM where he beautifully rebuilt Airstreams and vintage trailers into wonderful themed cozy nests circled up in the high desert – Hotel Luna Mystica.  The perfect life for his special talents. Andrew was preceded in death by his father Richard and is survived by: his Mother - Barbara Marianne Carleton; his children - Nicholas Andrew Carleton, Alexis Mackenzie Green (Husband: Ian Michiella Green), Zachary Richard Carleton (Wife: Danae Stewart Carleton); the mother of his children Susan Mary Parsons; his siblings - Elizabeth Marianne Carleton (+Joe Collins), Scott Hazen Carleton (Wife: Eva Szucs Carleton), Cairn Pauline Steele (Husband: David Lee Steele, predeceased), Paul Barney Carleton (Wife: Vickie Carleton), Lisa Marie Carleton Long (Husband: Brett Charles Long); his thirteen nieces and nephews and twenty two grand niblings; and his beloved Border Collie Angel (and also his treasured Logan, predeceased). Small gatherings will be held to remember Drew and celebrate his life.  Since his family and friends have been scattered throughout the country, THANK YOU for contributing to this page so we can all relive the various times of his life and the complicated spirit that he was.   Please remember Drew the next time you find a particularly beautiful or interesting rock, or hear a clever pun, or see a perfect hand built wooden spiral staircase.
