Allen Henry Medendorp, age 78, lost his fight with pancreatic cancer in the early morning of November, 21, 2021 in Los Alamos, NM.  He was born April 16, 1943 to Henry and Annette Medendorp in Grand Haven, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his wife of 54 years, Mary Medendorp. They were married on June 16, 1967.

He is survived by his three children, Gregory A. Medendorp (Anna) of Albuquerque, NM; Lisa A. Navarrete (James) of San Antonio, TX; and Brian J. Medendorp (Haley) of Nashua, NH. Al has two grandchildren, Elena Navarrete of San Antonio, TX and Otto Medendorp of Albuquerque, NM. He is also survived by his sisters Ada Busby and Betty Juell (Maynard) and two nephews and a niece and their children.

Al graduated from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI in 1964 and from University of Michigan with his Electrical Engineering Degree in 1967. Al and Mary married in 1967 and moved to Minneapolis, MN. They then moved to Omaha, NE where Greg and Lisa were born. Shortly after moving to Oklahoma, Brian was born. In addition to Minneapolis and Omaha, Mary and Al have lived in Alameda, CA; Edmond, OK; Neenah, WI; and Los Alamos, NM. Al worked many Electrical Engineering jobs which included Kimberly Clark, Merrick, and Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Al enjoyed woodworking, hiking, downhill skiing, and working on his classic car. He enjoyed traveling to Breckenridge, CO and many other adventurous destinations around the United States with friends and family.  Al enjoyed working on his homes as well at the homes in the small rental management business.

Al had a strong faith in Jesus Christ and served in his churches in all the towns he lived in. He served as an elder at the White Rock Presbyterian Church. As a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Allen will be deeply missed.

Allen’s family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Mission of the North, a group of Presbyterian Churches in Northern New Mexico. Or you can make a check out to “WRPC” putting the ministry you would like to donate to in the memo line.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, January 15th at 11:00 AM at White Rock Presbyterian Church at 310 Rover in White Rock, NM. Internment will take place after at 2:00PM Guaje Pines Cemetery.

I remember that tandem bike ride we did with Al and Mary from our apartment in southeast Grand Rapids to the old covered bridge in Ada. It was quite the ride and quite the fun. The sunburned upper legs...not so much.

Al and Mary were dear friends; Mary from grade school, high school, and college; Al was known to me in college. Both stood up in our marriage and I was privileged to stand up for Mary when they married in 1967. They were both well loved by my husband and me. May God grant His peace and comfort to their entire family.

Sending hugs, Lisa. Thinking of Al and the many fun times our families had together. This picture was taken on top of a bluff at Devils Lake State Park, Baraboo, WI in '88 (I believe). I will keep you all in my prayers.
