Forever in our hearts
Alexander “Zan” Neel Hicks, age 43, passed away unexpectedly on November 8, 2022. He was born on April 10, 1979, in Dallas, Texas to Wayne Hicks and Katherine Neel. Family and friends knew him as Zan. In 1996, Zan graduated from Waxahachie High School and went on to attend junior college. He later joined his brother in the construction industry where he began his career designing structural building components. He designed numerous residential and large commercial projects during his 20+ year tenure.
Zan had a thirst for knowledge and never stopped striving to learn more about the world around him. He enjoyed reading, listening to and discovering new music, collecting rare coins, camping, and traveling. He hiked the Andes Mountains in Peru and saw the Northern Lights in Canada. Zan also had a love of aviation and had a goal to attain a private pilot's license. Inspired by his grandfather Chester Neel, who was a pilot in the Air Force, and his Father, who was an airplane mechanic on a Navy aircraft Carrier, Zan logged many hours in the skies over Dallas, TX.
Zan will especially be remembered for his wit and intelligence. He was a treasure trove of historical facts and trivia. He was very bright and he didn’t miss a thing. He would often chime in with a witty retort and a knowing look. Zan will always be remembered for the generosity and love he held for those close to his heart. He was a devoted son during his mother’s long-term illness, providing love and support during her last days. He prioritized family and made an effort to check in on the lives of his loved ones, no matter the distance.
Zan was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. He was survived by his 3 siblings, Darrell Hicks, Virginia Hicks, and Amber Caraway; 3 nieces, Ashley Hicks, Carley Hicks, and Victoria Hicks; 1 nephew, Riley Hicks. And numerous other relatives and friends. An informal celebration of Zan’s life will be held at a later date.

My nephew, my friend , you brightened my days and even my nights. We challenged each other. You taught me so much. I was always surprised when I was able to tell u something that you didn’t know. Super smart sometimes u tried to and did teach me. It was only when you tried math that u hit a brick wall. U tried to teach me about fractals. I promised to hang up if u didn’t shut up. I miss ur calls , ur humor and sensitivity. I was wishing that u would take ur old aunt on a trip. U would have too. I loved u from ur birth. So cute and bright growing up. I wanted so much more for you. No more pain or hurt no more loneliness. For u Just for we who are left behind. Rest in peace , my sweet tender hearted boy Aunt Kay

Zan…I’m really missing you more and more as time goes by. I miss your crazy annoying texts and memes that would be relentless until I would respond! Usually with some horrible meme right back at you! You always found a way to make me laugh. You and I grew up together and would argue and gripe at each other like brother and sister. Especially when I would send a your when it should have been you’re! I hate that I didn’t come visit you that weekend. You asked me to maybe a million times and I just couldn’t get away. But I regret not trying harder. I don’t know if it would have changed anything but….I hate tht you were alone. I miss our after work talks while I was driving home. I miss you trying relentlessly to drive me crazy …..successfully usually! You were such a huge part of my life the last 5-6 years. We spoke almost every day. And Jamaica wouldn’t have been the same without you there. I’m rambling, but I just miss you. I miss hearing your voice. You had the best voice and your laugh was contagious! You could have me so irritated and then start laughing and I’d forget everything and laugh with you! You were thoughtful, and sweet, and also a child in so many ways that never wanted to grow up! Which was one of your most charming qualities! Lol and yes…you were charming. You would always tell me so and I would laugh and roll my eyes. But you definitely had charm! I’m so glad I went to visit you when I did. That weekend was so much fun and is putting the butthole stickers on the A1 bottle in that restaurant will forever make me laugh! And then the butthole sticker hunt in your house! We both laughed so much about that! I hate that I didn’t get to see you after you passed. I was going to put one in your hand so you could take it with you! I kept picturing you up there laughing so hard at that! Anyway I just miss him! I wish he was still here making us all laugh and driving us all crazy with his charm!

Zan was a top tier uncle who I looked up to since I was toddler and I saw him with 5mbps internet playing online video games when it was first possible to play multiplayer internet games. I would watch him play for hours. Definitely helped inspire my love for video gaming. I got to witness a lot of Zans wisdom over my lifetime, his sense of intelligence and genius inspired me. He held back but it was obvious he was a genius if you knew him well enough. He was one of those people who made you feel invincible when you were with him. Everyone who knew Zan I’m sure they can relay that he was a shear positive force in their life’s and to this world. I am honored to be a nephew of a man like Zan. I will continue to only honor him in life as his wisdom, teachings, love and spirit live on to impact the present and future. Love you always uncle. I’m sure I’ll be posting more since I can’t sum everything up in one post.
