I'm grateful for my journey so far because of where I am now.

Aldon Jacarus Smith was born on September 25, 1989, in Greenwood, Mississippi, and grew up to become one of the most electrifying pass rushers the NFL had ever seen — a force of nature on the field whose infectious smile was just as powerful off it. Raised in Missouri after his parents' divorce led him to move in with his father Thurston during his high school years, Aldon found his calling on the football field at Raytown High School and later at the University of Missouri, where he earned First-Team All-Big 12 honors and was named the Tigers' Defensive Lineman of the Year in 2010. The San Francisco 49ers selected him seventh overall in the 2011 NFL Draft, and he arrived in the Bay Area ready to announce himself to the world. As a rookie, he recorded 14 sacks and 27 quarterback hits — the second-most sacks ever by a rookie since 1982 — earning PFWA Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. His second season was nothing short of historic: 19.5 sacks broke a 49ers franchise record, earned him First-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl recognition, and made him the fastest player in NFL history to reach 30 career sacks. Over his first two seasons, he accumulated 33.5 sacks, a record for any player in their first two years in the league. He helped carry San Francisco to three consecutive NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl XLVII appearance. What followed were years of profound struggle. Off-field legal troubles and battles with substance abuse derailed a career of generational promise, leading to suspensions and ultimately his release. But Aldon Smith refused to let that be his final chapter. Through Jay Glazer's Merging Vets and Players program and the Unbreakable gym, he fought his way back — not just to the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys in 2020 and Seattle Seahawks in 2021, but to himself. "I'm not owed another shot in the NFL," he said, taking full responsibility with a grace that moved everyone who heard it. In the final chapter of his life, Aldon mentored NFL rookies adjusting to the league's pressures and dedicated himself to charitable work in the Bay Area. On his final day, he delivered pizzas to CHAM Deliverance Ministry, a local organization feeding the homeless — an act that spoke to who he had become. Aldon Smith passed away on June 13, 2026, at the age of 36. He leaves behind a legacy not just of record-setting sacks, but of resilience, humility, and a big-hearted generosity that lit up every room he entered.

I did not know Aldon, however, I have read about his life and believe he was a fine young man who had God in his heart. Thurston and Esther, I am so sorry for your loss. May the Lord bless you and keep you, may the Lord make His face to shine on you and be gracious to you, may the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace. You are in my prayers.

Today we remember Aldon Smith, a gifted football player whose talent, strength, and impact on the game will never be forgotten. Aldon was one of the most dominant pass rushers of his era, a player who could change a game with his speed, power, and relentless effort. From his standout years at Missouri to his explosive time in the NFL, he gave football fans moments they will always remember. Aldon Smith was more than just an athlete—he was a competitor, a teammate, and a man whose presence was felt every time he stepped on the field. His ability to rush the quarterback and take over games made him one of the most feared defenders in football during his prime. He inspired many young athletes by showing what hard work, natural talent, and determination could look like at the highest level. Though his life ended far too soon at only 36 years old, his name and legacy will continue to live on in the football world. He will be remembered for his incredible talent, his passion for the game, and the excitement he brought to every snap. Rest in peace, Aldon Smith. Gone too soon, but never forgotten. Aldon's undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization, having recorded one of the best rookie seasons the National Football League has seen. Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into.
