Loved Ones

Energy, form, imagination, and love as interconnected forces

Let’s celebrate the extraordinary life of a man who touched so many hearts and minds throughout his 30,637 days (83 years and 10.5 months) on this earth.

Albert's story began in the small hamlet of Hampton, Ontario, Canada on November 9, 1941, born to Mary (nee Vircala) and John Liptay. From those humble beginnings on the family farm in Haydon, we can see the seeds of the remarkable man he would become. Even as a young boy, Albert displayed the curiosity and determination that would define his life. He would lie on the ground looking up at clouds, dreaming of possibilities. He saved every penny of his allowance to buy a radio, teaching himself Morse code and setting up a HAM radio station using the old windmill tower as his antenna.

Albert's academic journey was nothing short of remarkable. From high school valedictorian to graduating cum laude from university, and finally earning his PhD, he blazed a trail that would inspire his entire family.

Albert was far more than his impressive credentials. He was a man of lightning-fast reflexes, catching flies with his bare hands and, more importantly, saving lives. When young Karessa fell into the pool, her Onkel Albert appeared like superman, diving in to rescue her before anyone else could react. His quick thinking and protective nature were legendary in the family.

At the heart of Albert's remarkable life was his beloved Friedel, her "PAL," her Perfect Albert Liptay. Their love story was one for the ages, a partnership that his family witnessed with admiration for decades. In Albert’s own words - “The first time I met my wife, I noticed a beautiful lady walking on the grounds at the University of Guelph, towards the college. I told myself I would like to meet this woman, and then I found out that not only was she good looking, but I had seen her in German class and I said “hey! I can get to know her here!”. Once the German class had ended was the first time I spoke to her, then I knew I would get to spend the rest of my life talking to her, I knew I was going to have fun with her for every second of every day.”  Albert's devotion to his wife, Friedel, was legendary among their family. He was always there for her throughout their journey together, making her feel cherished and special every single day. Their shared motto:  "We can do difficult things at once; it's the impossible that takes a bit longer" reflected not just Albert's determination but their united approach to life's challenges.  Friedel was not just his wife but his true partner in every adventure.

As a father, Albert taught by example. His daughter Tiffany learned the power of focus from watching him work, no task was insurmountable with creativity and persistence. He showed her how to slow down and truly see the beauty in every moment, like those glistening, rainbow-filled branches after an ice storm on Hickory Lane, Kingsville, Ontario. His son-in-law Nigel will never forget that first meeting, hauling tree stumps for nine hours while Albert carefully placed each one like fine china, teaching through his own tireless work ethic.

But perhaps Albert's greatest gift was how he saw people. Whether his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews, Albert spoke to them as a person, not a child, encouraging learning and curiosity through stories of his own journey. He saw potential in everyone, regardless of age.

His grandchildren, Desiree, Hamilton, Juniper, Bodhi, Thea and Friede, knew him as the scientist with answers to everything, the man who encouraged experimentation and learning through trial and error. Hamilton and Desiree remember "Bring Your Grandkids to Work Day" at Stoller, where Opa would show them his research and the crops he was studying and let them enjoy some of the office snacks :-) . At Opa & Baba’s home, they remember the fully stocked pantry where parents' rules didn't apply, the dollhouse, the endless card games, and Opa's famous stories, especially the one about riding Superman the cow, which thanks to his superfast reflexes when a low-hanging branch should have knocked him out, he grabbed it quickly and swung to the ground while the cow kept on.

Bodhi will always smile remembering Opa in Iceland, while everyone else marveled at the glaciers, Opa was on the ground studying the plant life, prompting Desiree to write "Woohoo Grass!" on her welcome card at one of Opa’s visits. Friede treasures their games of canasta and the story of his uncle who lifted a thousand pounds. Thea remembers the orange trees in Texas and how Opa would hop right back up and try again whenever times got tough.

Opa always made family his first priority, above all else.  When Juniper was young, he planned many visits to Florida to be able to spend time with Juniper eating raspberry and blackberries and talking about life’s marvels.  On family trips, Opa was the resident grand-children entertainer and learner, while parents enjoyed some adult time.

His impact extended far beyond his family into his career as a scientist - as Vice President of Global Research and Development at Stoller Enterprises and prior to that researcher for Agriculture Canada, Albert dedicated his career to enhancing crop productivity and yields around the world. He was honored throughout his career for his creative thinking and dedication to advancing agricultural science.

But what we'll remember most is not just Albert the scientist, but Albert the man, the father, the uncle, the grandfather, who taught patience, kindness and exploring academic options. The grandfather “Opa” who made every visit an adventure, the husband who showed us what true partnership looks like, the brother who inspired and supported his siblings throughout their lives.

Albert believed that for those with curiosity and a zest for life, every day was an amazing journey of continuous learning. He lived that philosophy completely, right up to the end. He showed us that age is not a barrier to growth, that wonder should never fade, and that the greatest legacy we can leave is the love we give and the curiosity we inspire in others.

Albert believed in possibility. No problem was insurmountable, that nature held endless wonder, that learning never stopped, and that family was the most important of all.

As his daughter Friedel says, Albert gave his family an innate zest for life. As we say goodbye to this remarkable man, we carry forward that zest, that curiosity, that unwavering determination to keep learning, growing and loving.

Albert lived a life well-used, a mind fully engaged, and a heart completely open. Though we will miss his warm smile, his encouraging words, and his infectious enthusiasm for discovery, his spirit lives on in each of us. Every time we pause to truly see beauty in the world, every time we encourage a young person's curiosity, every time we face a challenge with determination and creativity, we honor Albert's memory.

Albert / Dad / Opa / Uncle - we will continue the journey of continuous learning you taught us, carrying your memory and your lessons with us always.

He will forever be remembered by his children Albert & June Liptay, Friedel & Tim Thurman and Tiffany-Emil & Nigel Jacob and

his grandchildren Friede Clair Albert Jacob, Thea Friedel Erma Jacob, Bodhi FitzPatrick Emil Jacob, Juniper Ellen Liptay, Hamilton Edmund Albert Thurman and Desiree Friedel Thurman

Abhilash Pandya

When we went to visit him in Houston, I remember him deep in reading scientific articles to understand what was the root cause of his illness. Never giving up and trying to use the science to understand what was possible. What a mind—Stoic, intelligent and scientific. Shanti, Abhilash and the whole Pandya family.

Albert's niece Laurie

Uncle Albert was a man who lived with passion and purpose. To spiritualize life is to live in the ordinary world and recognize the glow of the extraordinary, the magic, shining within it. Uncle Albert did just this. He lived fully, immersed in a well of curiosity that never ran dry. Like the mighty Oak tree, Albert was a man deeply rooted, yet always reaching upward and forward, determined to accomplish all he could in his professional life. But he was never only that. In equal measure to his career, he gave himself to those he loved. I saw it firsthand — the inspired, if weary, determination on his face after driving 24 hours straight from Texas to Ontario, just to be present for his grandchild’s birthday. Or the time he flew from Texas to Boston simply to receive a washer and dryer delivery for his daughter and son-in-law who were only minutes away at work. To say I was amazed by such efforts is an understatement. I have never known anyone who would go so far, so selflessly, for the love of his family. Another gift of his was conversation. He took the time to speak with you, whether or not you shared common ground. Jake remembers one night in particular: the night he hosted the traveling Liptay clan by himself while we were away, even making them dinner. Jake was just about to fall asleep on the couch at 5:30 in the morning when Uncle Albert rose with the sun. He opened the blinds, sat down with Jake, and spoke with him for more than three hours. We never know, in the moment, how such simple encounters will become lifelong, cherished memories. I count myself truly blessed to have shared many such moments with my uncle and his beautiful wife. They remain treasures I hold close in my heart. I would just like to include part of a character reference letter I was asked to write in recent years for my uncle and aunt. Friedel and Albert are incredible human beings who I hold in high regard. Both are highly educated professionals, cultured, well-traveled and highly regarded in their professions.  Above their lifetime of remarkable professional achievements, this couple’s greatest strengths are their conscientious attention to the details of all of the aspects of their lives, exhibiting exceptional diligence, dedication, and integrity.  They have met each obstacle with determination, courage, strength, and resourcefulness.  They are creative, loving, sociable, knowledgeable and honourable in every way.   I am proud to be their niece.  And now a poem, edited and adapted from his birthday poem. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A Brief History of my Uncle Dr Albert Liptay They say when a star is born that clouds of dust coalesce from a scattered state . Somewhere in the galaxy, a deep turbulence manifested its gravitational fate. A central hot core formed and over the next several billion years. Quantum bounds and quantum leaps brought this star stirring near. Emergent from the Hampton dust, a speck of a hamlet here on Earth, November 9, 1941 was the day of Albert's birth. “Our son” Maria would have said to John and her heart filled with joy. For she was brilliant herself, and she knew this also, to be of her boy. Soon the family left Hampton, then Columbus too, At last they made their home in Haydon, working the fields as best they knew. From these humble roots a bright star rose — Albert, destined to shine, Whose mind turned ever toward science, his pursuit both noble and fine. He followed that passion with brilliance, excelling in every part, Yet greater still was the devotion he carried in his heart. For nothing gave him deeper joy than his dearest Friedel, his wife, Together they built a haven, a love that shaped their life. Their circle opened wide to me, with kindness freely shown, They nurtured, encouraged, uplifted and always made me feel at home. I remember how dearly my mother loved her brother, the esteem she held so high, I’m grateful to call him Uncle, a guiding star in my sky. I love that he told me the history of our distant past. A thread of connection to our ancestors who've passed. I honour all that he accomplished, I’ll always be his fan, A bastion of science and purpose, a truly remarkable man. Thank you, Uncle Albert, for the faith you placed in me, And for sharing your wisdom with such generosity. You are a jewel I treasure, whose brilliance is rare, Each conversation we had reminds me that I have an uncle who truly cared. Fly high now dear Uncle you have been my inspiration, it’s true. Not only for your brilliant mind but also for just being uniquely you. Four score and four ago, our family was blessed with your birth And now we bid farewell as you return to Mother Earth. Thank you for your life. Rest in peace. Dear Uncle. September 24, 2025
