A Life That Touches Others Goes On Forever

On Thursday July 14, 2022, Adolf Bengha Fokumlah (Ba Tita Wa’ati) passed away at the age of 75.

Adolf Bengha Fokumlah was born on Wednesday December 11, 1946 in Bali Nyonga to Fokumlah Philip and Kah Suzanna. He spent many of his childhood years in the North West Region especially in Bali and Nkambe while in Primary School. He also spent a short time in Mamfe while living with his sister and her husband.

Adolf attended Secondary School at Cameroon Protestant College (CPC), Bali, and high school at Cameroon College of Art, Science and Technology (CCAST), Bambili. Upon completion of his high school education, he was hired as a Trainee at Cameroon Development Corporation (CDC). In 1968, he was awarded a scholarship through the African Scholarship Program of American Universities (ASPAU) for Undergraduate Studies at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa, and earned both a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.

While at the University, he met Valarie Patricia Bartley a native of St. Kitts, West Indies. They dated for over a year and got married in Hawaii on August 26, 1972. They built a home in Bobende, Cameroon and raised 4 children together. Adolf returned to work at CDC and was there for 38 years before he retired on December 31, 2003 as the Production Director. He and his family established LANNVA, their private Agricultural business which he spent a lot of his time growing.

Adolf was passionate about many things including family and education, ensuring that all of his children were educated at the University level, and helping many of his extended family members pursue their own education. He had a long-time love of tennis: even at 75 years of age, he could be found on the tennis courts at SS Club Bota several times a week, playing for hours. In the last few years, he developed a passion for naturopathic remedies, which combined with his love for farming was his main pastime in retirement. He was always one to share his knowledge and experience with any who would listen, hence his nickname 'Prof' among his friends and acquaintances.

Adolf was preceded in death by his daughter, Nina Ngohndab Fokumlah. He is survived by his wife Valarie Patricia Fokumlah; his children: Lela Kabisen Fokumlah, Alexander Njininkah Fokumlah, Nellie Febe Etombi Fisher née Fokumlah, Susan Nebisen Tita Wa’ati and Aaron Fengang Tita Wa’ati; his grand-children: Anna Kakizaki-Fokumlah, Hina Kakizaki-Fokumlah and Josiah Ryan Fisher; as well as several siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Uncle A.... the suddenness of your transition is tough to comprehend but as you reminded us way back when "adequate planning makes surprises seem expected" and planning you did. Even transitioned you're still imparting knowledge. You made everyone around you feel significant. Even as a kid, you always sought my input on anything we discussed. Thanks for the lessons and while we'll miss you physically, you remain in all of us. The bonds y'all as our parents created continue to grow stronger as we too attain more and more wisdom. Those bonds help us uplift each other in challenging times and celebrate all our victories, united. You're our ancestor now and will play a different role in guiding us. Thank you Uncle A, love always. Young Ewang

Always on my mind, forever in my heart. Thank you Uncle Adolf for being a great uncle and assuming the role of father after loosing my dad.  You treated me as wonderfully as you did your kids. Always with a smile and ready to listen.  You were always kind and gentle with me.  I remember you telling Lela and I that men need to walk through the front door with confidence to rather than knock on a window.  We took your advice to heart and live by that.  There were many wonderful memories and I will cherish those moments. You were a rock we all needed and glad to have. You may be gone from my sight but you are never gone from my heart, I love you Uncle Adolf. Leb

Uncle Adolf, I just want to say thank you for all the times I came and spent over at your place at Bobende with Zaria and Ngale. You always made me feel so welcomed and you always made sure I had so much food to eat and lacked nothing. Every time I came to your place there was always a table full of food and you would tell me you made sure they made a bit of everything because you didn’t know what we would like. You would even go to the extent of letting me know you would take care of Zaria if we got so overwhelmed at night. Thank you for all the wise discussions and for letting me try quail eggs for the first time

Ni Adolf, your passing away still appears unreal to me though it has been certified. I first met you on March 20, 1979 at age 12, in Mondoni when your wife agreed with my uncle for me to be part of your household. We proceeded to Tiko a year later where I took a recess in 1981 only to catch up with you in Bobende Limbe in 1986. We live in your family home in Bobende till 1988 during which period you sponsored me in Government High School Limbe. On my graduation from the university of Yaounde, we rejoined again in 1992 and l was with you up to 1995. I finally left Cameroon in1996 for the United States where I am currently. From our first meeting, you took me as your son and saw potentials in me which I was not even aware of. You took steps for me to continue my education, l had just completed primary school, but which my elder brother ignorantly frustrated. That your vision for me remained alive and at the more appropriate time you and your wife gave it a push by sponsoring me in the Government High School Limbe. Your ambitious and hardworking spirit inspired me and many others and shaped our lives for success. Many of us are happy beneficiaries of your generosity, advice, and support in life. You were always optimistic and largely positive in life. You imparted the lives of many who came across you. You are one of the most industrious persons l have met in my lifetime. I can still remember you full of vitality and conviction as you explained the functioning of the garri manufacturing plant you were setting up in Bobende, when I last visited you in 2016. Little did l know that our phone conversation of December 25, 2020 was going to be our last. Ni, you lived a fulfilled life and our Creator decided to call you home to rest, though untimely to us humans. We endure your vacuum painfully with the hope of meeting you to part no more when our own turn arrives.
