Our mother, Min Cui Song, was born on December 29, 1934 (Lunar calendar) in Sichuan, China. She passed away at 10:16 am on July 18, 2025 in Virginia, USA. She left quietly and peacefully.
Our mother was born in a small village in Ziyang. The beautiful scenery of her hometown made her graceful and elegant. When she was young, she came to Chengdu from her hometown, met and married our father Diao Xingfa.
She had 7 children (the eldest daughter and eldest son died in the great famine in the early 1960s). In the material scarcity period of the 1950s and 1960s, my mother and father worked hand in hand, raised five daughters with meager wages and hard-working hands, and gave them education, life skills and wisdom.
Although they were poor, they were positive, had a noble family style, treated people, and behaved like famous ladies. All the children made achievements and lived up to the love and expectations of their father and mother.
Later, as my mother grew older, she took on the responsibility of taking care of her grandchildren without any hesitation. Every grandchild in the family grew up in the hands of her mother. Even though she later traveled across the ocean to the United States, the last grandson, Yangyang, also grew up under the care of her grandmother. This is the favor of my grandmother to us. It is a great honor for the six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren to spend a wonderful childhood in my grandmother's arms listening to her songs and nursery rhymes.
My mother is straightforward and optimistic, dares to love and hate, and often points out people and things she doesn't like, and never tolerates them.
My mother is strong and brave. She fought against the disease countless times, and she won every time. She stood up tenaciously again and again, and continued her happy life until the final merit was fulfilled and she said goodbye with a smile.
My mother is our role model. We should care and cherish our family like you, be full of love for life, face the unsatisfactory world around us positively, and use our own efforts to make our lives better.
We will miss your mother, your bright smile, your singing during every Chinese New Year, your constant concern for us, and your love will always be with us.
Rest in peace, mom, we will be mother and daughter again in the next life.

Dear Grandma, It’s been 32 years since we became family. I still remember how you looked the first time we met. All these years, the love you and Dad gave to me, Min, and Zhouqi is forever etched in our hearts. We hope you’re at peace in heaven, and if there’s a next life—let’s be family again. It was an honor and blessing to have known Song MingCui - who I called LaoLao too! Her life was an inspiration to me. She was so friendly towards me and enjoyed telling me stories about her daughters - Particularly stories about Diao Rong who I call my GanMa (干妈). Song MingCui was always looking out for her family. Whenever I would sit beside her at a family dinner she would ask me how her daughter was doing before anything else. She truly cared about her family above all else. One of my fondest memories, which was nearly 10 years ago now, was at a time when she had just been diagnosed with high blood pressure. Her daughter had to return to China for a couple weeks so I would come by to see her and keep her company before going to work. We would drink tea and chat for a while. Even with my minimal understanding of Mandarin at the time I was able to learn so much about her. Since that time I have had a deep respect for all she has done in life. Her story is one of triumph and nurturing. Anything she touched grew into something beautiful - from taking cuts of flowers or branches and growing them into full grown plants to her large and flourishing family, all have been cultivated by her spectacular, one-of-a-kind self. Her memory will be for a blessing always!
