September 28th, 1935 - April 11th, 2025
Jonathan Whitmore, a devoted husband, father, educator, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2025, at the age of 89, surrounded by his loved ones in his lifelong home of Rhode Island.Born on September 28, 1935, Jonathan grew up in a home filled with books, music, and a deep respect for learning. From a young age, he showed a natural curiosity about the world and a quiet, determined spirit. He attended Brown University, where he studied history and developed a deep appreciation for the power of storytelling, heritage, and civic engagement. After graduating, Jonathan began what would become a decades-long career in public education and local government. His passion for teaching and community service left an indelible mark on generations of students and neighbors alike. Known for his integrity, humility, and dry sense of humor, Jonathan was the kind of person who remembered your favorite book, showed up when you needed help, and never lost sight of the bigger picture. In 1965, he married the love of his life, Linda Harrison. Their marriage of nearly 60 years was built on respect, shared values, and endless love. Together, they raised two children—Peter, born in 1968, and Emily, born in 1974—whom Jonathan adored and supported through every chapter of life. He was a proud and gentle father, always ready with advice, encouragement, or a quiet nudge in the right direction.Jonathan loved the sea and spent many peaceful weekends sailing the Narragansett Bay. He was also a passionate reader, a lover of classical music, and a quiet observer of life’s small beauties—from the morning paper to the changing of the seasons. Later in life, he took joy in his role as a grandfather, telling stories, playing board games, and passing on his thoughtful wisdom to the next generation. He is survived by his beloved wife Linda, his children Peter and Emily (Dawson), and the many people whose lives he touched through kindness, insight, and unwavering moral compass.Jonathan Whitmore lived a life of meaning, grace, and quiet strength. He will be remembered not just for what he did, but for who he was.
