“What is grief, if not love persevering?”
Welcome to a site of remembrance for our beloved Papa Jack.
Jack, Papa, Papa Jack lived an incredible life, and touched so many people’s lives in the process. We wanted to provide a place where those whose lives he touched can connect through our memories and shared love for him. This virtual space will be available for at least a year for that purpose.
So whenever you feel called, we welcome you to (scroll down to Tributes and make a post to) share your thoughts and feelings, memories and experiences, photos and anything else you might want to share in celebration and mourning of a beautiful man. Feel free to write multiple times (whenever inspiration strikes), or to wait until you know what you want to say. All is important, all is welcome.

Some folks have asked if they can send cards to Marina, and she would love that - the address is
2638 NW Waymaker Ct, Bend, OR 97703.
She is a bit inundated by gorgeous flowers, so she'd rather not have more right now- though you are welcome to send some in a few months as a surprise ;-).
Some folks have asked where they might donate in honor of Jack, which is lovely: you are welcome to donate to Doctors Without Borders, or to any organization whose values reflect Jack's.
Together, let us honor Papa Jack and connect in our love for him.

I met Jack at Stanford-in-France when we were both 19, in a group of 80 lucky kids living, learning, and traveling together for 6 months. Even then, Jack had a zest for making friends and exploring the world. It was wonderful to see him and meet Marina at reunions of our group. Many years later, he called to invite me to the Little family Thanksgiving celebration at their home on Camano Island and arranged to have a friend drive me there from Seattle. I got to see Marina once again and met Devon and Ian for the first time. At dinner, I learned that Jack's plan was for me to tell his family the whole story of our France experience! I had lots of memories, and Jack was a good prompter, so I did my best. Marina and Devon and Ian were very polite and patiently listened to our saga. I loved my immersion in their beautiful family.

Jack and I were roommates for two quarters at Stanford-in-France’s Tours campus in 1963-64. Happily, Jack drew #1 in the room lottery: from our window we looked out on the Loire River. Often, we put ourselves to sleep discussing the life transitions we were each navigating at 19. Years later he was quick to facilitate our connection with a Seattle specialist when my first wife was battling breast cancer. I was looking forward to the possibility of reconnecting at our 60th college reunion in October. He remains a friend for life. My heart-felt condolences go to his wife and family. Sincerely, Ken Jernstedt

This last group of photos was taken on two very special occasions: In June we celebrated his birthday while on a week long cruise in the Sea of Cortez. Jack had a wonderful time. We all did. And then the weekend of his sister Suzanne's Celebration of Life. Jack was in fine form.

My family and I knew Jack through our good friend Devon. Whenever we crossed paths he made us and especially our children feel welcome, like part of the family. Our hearts go out to everyone who is missing him. With Love, The Rakers

I sang with Jack in the Master Chorale of Flagstaff. He was such a sweet man, always had a smile, and was interesting to talk to. He was one who left his positive mark on all those he met. My sincere condolences to all his family and friends. I’m glad he had a life well lived. Stephanie Hammond
