Idris Amali

# Farewell, General Balami In Maiduguri's flood-swept streets, a solemn scene unfolds, As priests and undertakers gather, your story to be told. Balami, dear friend, your journey on earth now ends, To mother earth's embrace, your mortal form descends. Tears erupt like volcanoes, marking your painful exit, Nature's fury echoes loss, as if the heavens split. Forty-four years of wisdom, shared with countless minds, Your legacy in academia, forever intertwined. Oh, pillar of English, alongside Abubakar Othman, Too young, too soon you've left us, our hearts heavy, broken. Your humor healed, your kindness shone, your intellect blazed bright, Standing tall for truth and knowledge, a beacon in the night. From your casket, could you see the flood of tears we weep? The lives you've touched, the souls you've shaped, promises we'll keep. Barricade death's stubborn path, shield those left behind, Your sudden departure leaves us searching, answers hard to find. To you, Balami, and Othman too, Generals without war, We salute your battles fought, on academic shore. May God grant you eternal rest, as your sun sets too soon, Your memory, a guiding star, beneath life's fickle moon. Idris Amali grieves, for Generals at their final post, Your legacy lives on in us, of this, we proudly boast. Farewell, dear friend, goodbye forever, your race is finally run, In our hearts, you'll always be, our ever-shining sun.

Beloved student

Our Dear Teacher, I was with HYELADZIRA for over three decades, it's only through your EPITAPH ON HIM that I came to know how scholarly grounded he was.Eversince, the policy of "NO PhD,NO PROMOTION TO SENIOR LECTURER" let alone to the RANK OF A READER OR PROFESSOR ",all those who for one reason or the other did not obtain this REQUISITE QUALIFICATION are seen as"NOT SERIOUS ACADEMICS" or sometimes wrongly tagged as"INADEQUATE " or "LACK THE REQUISITE INTELLECTUAL STUFF " TO DO THE RESEARCH. BUT, FROM YOUR WRITE-UP, HYELADZIRA WAS FAR FROM THAT.IT'S A PITY,I LEARNT THAT TOO LATE. ADIEU HYELADZIRA!

GOOD NIGHT PROF He was my favorite lecturer, a literary stalwart, a grammar specialist, a language Engineer and more. He was extremely kind hearted, considerate and jocular. He was intelligent and had his way with words. I always looked forward to his lectures. He was so gracious. While still undergraduates, we approached him to write the preface for a literary anthology we were working on, all he did was to pick his pen and paper. He penned down the masterpiece in one sitting. He was an English Maestro. He underlined, circled, and punctuated most of the news papers I saw in his office. He spoke impeccable English. In one of our final lectures with him, he encouraged us to master the English grammar by reading wide. He also counseled us to be gracious with our words. He said: “a person who knows English is the person who knows what to say when.” He was a great poet. In fact, my final year project was a literary analysis of his poems. This was in 2007, about 17 years ago. He sent me a congratulatory note on my ordination as a pastor and prayed that God would prosper His work in my hands. Rest on Prof Hyeladzira Ali Balami. Well miss you greatly.

H. BALAMI: A GENERAL AS I FONDLY CALLED HIM. Balami today is your final physical presence on this earth as they are taking you to your final abode in the womb of mother earth. I least expect this from you. But it is not your making. As l am dropping these lines, bold tears in round balls erupt in volcanic manner to painfully mark your painful exit. I can see from afar, the priests and undertakers around your final place of rest in the city of Maiduguri of historic flood a few days ago. The great dies with great signs from nature as the week of your death is the week of the great flood of Maiduguri. It marks a great day in the history of flooding in Maiduguri. Balami, when l cast back my forensic mind, all that we went through, the pains of the academia, the failures, successes of the system and bringing up thousands of academic enthusiasts across the nation for forty four years, your good human relationship and standing for the truth always, your healing humour, your kindness particularly to students, the great power of your intellect in your field of academic endeavour, your resilience in wanting to be left alone to design who you want to be which we all respect to this point, l can say we have been living a fulfilled life. Only God knows the great knowledge you have impacted upon your students and others. Without fear of contradiction, you and Abubakar Othman who were great pillars of the English Department have left too young and too soon as we grief over your departures. Balami, l wish you could peep from your casket to see the flood of tears surging behind you to your eternal abode of rest. Balami barricade this stubborn path of death to shield your family, loved ones , friends and colleagues from following your sudden path. May God in His infinite mercy grant you eternal rest. Balami as you are going, let us tell you that you have left behind a lot of souls in pains. It is Idris Amali of Generals without War saluting our departing Generals at War in our stubborn days. Farewell Balami and goodbye forever, Dr Abubakar Othman as your suns have set too early to comprehend life. Idris Amali 18th September, 2024
