Forever the teacher — a quote for every occasion and a special way of touching the lives and hearts of everyone she met.

Tedde Moore was a luminous presence in Canadian theatre, film, and television — an actress of uncommon grace, a devoted teacher, and a woman who, by all accounts, had a quote for every occasion and a special way of touching the lives and hearts of everyone she met. Born Dorothea Mavor Moore on April 11, 1947, in Toronto, Ontario, she was steeped in the performing arts from her very first breath. She was the daughter of actor and cultural icon Mavor Moore, the granddaughter of Canadian theatre legend Dora Mavor Moore, and the great-granddaughter of Scottish economist James Mavor. She adopted the nickname "Tedde" (pronounced "Teddy") at the outset of her career — a name that would become synonymous with warmth and craft. After honing her skills at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, she graduated in 1967 with the Principal's Medal of Honor, the school's highest distinction. Returning to Canada, Tedde wasted no time. She stepped onto the Stratford Festival stage opposite Christopher Walken in A Midsummer Night's Dream, and throughout the late 1960s and 1970s, she built a formidable reputation across regional theatre, film, and television. In 1976, she took home the Canadian Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Paula in Second Wind, directed by her life partner Donald Shebib. Then came the role that would reach millions. In 1983, eight months pregnant with her son Noah, she stepped in front of the cameras to play the stern yet tender Miss Shields in Bob Clark's A Christmas Story. The performance earned her a Genie Award nomination and became part of holiday folklore — one she reprised in the 1994 sequel My Summer Story, making her the only cast member to appear in both films. A Dora Mavor Moore Award for her stage work in The Walls of Africa (2001) further affirmed her range and staying power. Beyond performing, Tedde served for decades as an acting instructor and creative consultant, shaping the next generation of Canadian talent. In 1997, she co-authored Standing Naked in the Wings: Anecdotes from Canadian Actors, published by Oxford University Press. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2009, she continued to work and mentor with characteristic resilience, retiring only in 2017. She spent her final years in Huntsville, Muskoka, Ontario, a place she loved deeply. Tedde Moore passed away on September 5, 2026, at age 79, overlooking Fairy Lake under sunny skies, surrounded by her family. She is survived by her children Noah, Suzanna, Zoë, and Chaunce, and five grandchildren. Forever the teacher. Forever remembered.
