Recuerdos

Vienna was born on 19th February 1938 in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, the daughter of Gaspar and Maria Preçiosa Pereira. Sadly, her mother died when she was just nine years old. After some years in Goa - Ambora and Betalbatim, she moved with her father and brothers, Reggie and Sunny to Nakuru, Kenya. Vienna attended Goan School and later Menangai High School, where she met many of her lifelong friends, including her husband Ceasar. Her first recollections of Ceasar were that he was a tall, strong boy, good at sports and a friend of her brothers. She was shy and he often teased her about her hockey skills. She was good at her studies, especially mathematics and spoke Portuguese, Swahili and Konkani as well as English. One of her first jobs after leaving school was as a Secretary at Kenya County Council. She had a keen interest in dressmaking, cooking, darts, table-tennis, cycling adventures with her friends, going to dances and listening to live bands. She regularly met her friends at the Nakuru Goan Institute where she would attend and help organise sports and social events. In January 1966, Vienna married Ceasar. Their daughter Pressie was born later that year. Four years later, Terrance was born and in 1972 the family moved to England, settling in Leicester. Her first impressions of the U.K. were that it was cold, grey and lacking in social activities, not surprising when compared to life in Kenya. Vienna’s strength and hard-working attitude helped her to find a job and quickly settle down. In 1974, Kevin was born. Vienna and Ceasar made many treasured friends in Leicester, however, in 1976, due to improved employment prospects and a chance to be nearer to her brothers and to Ceasar’s family, she and her family moved to Welling, Kent. Vienna worked in credit control for Cadbury-Schweppes whilst her children were studying. She had a strong Catholic faith which she instilled in her family. She enjoyed travelling, good food – being a good cook herself, football – an enthusiastic Arsenal supporter and a formidable opponent at card games. She enjoyed watching the occasional soap opera and a good discussion about current affairs. Vienna was an intelligent, caring and humble woman, always willing to help. She made an impression on people because of her direct and forthright attitude - what you saw was what you got - an example most of us can only hope to emulate. She will be dearly missed by her children, family, friends and colleagues.

Vienna always had a smile on her face. Both Caesar and Vienna generously welcomed us whenever we visited. I shall miss the delicious pickles and am grateful that she willingly shared her recipes so she will always be in my home. I will miss her cheeky witty sense of humour. I know she will be happy to be reunited with Caesar which is a comfort. A lovely genuine down to earth couple.

Today marks a month since Vienna’s passing, a month in which she has been in our thoughts & prayers every single day. Our only consolation is that she is free from all earthly sufferings and is now reunited with her beloved Caesar. Vienna was a beautiful and caring soul, ever ready to advise and help whenever needed. She and Caesar complemented each other perfectly - he with his ready smile and quiet sense of humour, and she with her equally brilliant humour and straightforward nature. We lived far away and yet eagerly looked forward to the times we would meet. We particularly remember her frank comments which always left us in splits of laughter, even when directed at us. That lively & enthusiastic spirit of hers always made their visits so much fun. .....Rest in peace, dear Vienna.... we miss you, and yet treasure with love the beautiful bouquet of memories you’ve left behind.... Love always, Zoe & Valerie

Vienna was a very special friend going back to the days in Nakuru. When left for England in the 70’s we kept in touch remembered each other’s birthdays. She was an excellent cook, her special fruit Cake was well known and she gave her recipe willingly which, to this day I use at christmas time and call her when I am baking it. When Ceaser died she just gave up and could’nt face life without him. Her beloved children, Pressie, Kevin and Terence kept her going. She suffered a lot. Now she is with her beloved Ceaser. May she rest in eternal peace with Ceaser.

Dearest A.Vienna, We have some very cherished memories of you, U.Caesar and the kids, when we visited England some years ago and stayed at your place. You were an awesome cook and some of your culinary skills must’ve rubbed off on Pressie because she made us a really lovely apple pie for dessert one day! Your cheerful banter made us feel ever so comfortable. Colin was just 3 years old and rather keen on helping you roll chapatis. You cheerfully showed him how it was done, and very soon he had mastered the technique - in theory at least ;) “Press and roll” he would say very earnestly to anyone who asked him how it was done. Over the years we’ve made lots of chapatis and Paul and I have recalled this incident heaps of times! We take a special delight in dishing up some hot chapatis for our guests as well, when they stay over. And of course when Colin does the rolling we cannot help sharing this fond memory with them as well. So if you ever hear “Press and roll” you can be sure we’re thinking of you. Rest in peace, A. Vienna - you’ve made the world a better place with your candid charm and genuine warmth. Love and God bless, Paul, Gail, Colin and Jonathan

Vienna was truly one of a kind: a no nonsense, straight down the line, say it like it is lady ... but with a kind heart and lovely smile. The few times we spent with her were unique and we always departed happy that we had been in her company. Our thoughts and prayers are with Pressie, Terry and Kevin who cared for their Mum with honour, love and patience that was a blessing for Vienna and will be a blessing for you three in the future. We send our warmest thoughts and condolences....Mark and Fiona
