Disabled or not, everyone deserves an opportunity.

Roy Frank "RJ" Mitte III was born on August 21, 1992, in Jackson, Mississippi, and adopted by Roy Frank Mitte Jr. and Dyna Mitte. His entry into the world was difficult — delivered via emergency caesarean after sustaining brain damage at birth — and by age three he had been diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Rather than shrink from that reality, RJ spent his childhood working through physical therapy, strengthening himself through sports, and refusing to let his condition define the ceiling of his ambitions. Growing up between his grandparents' ranch in Texas and Lafayette, Louisiana, RJ's early years were shaped by resilience in ways few young people ever face. When he was thirteen, his mother was paralyzed in a car accident, and he quietly stepped into the role of his family's primary financial provider — a responsibility he carried, without complaint, for the rest of his life. "I have devoted my life to my mom and my sister," he once said, "and I still take care of them today." In 2006, the family relocated to Los Angeles to support his younger sister Lacianne's acting career. RJ enrolled in acting classes mainly to make friends in an unfamiliar city. What followed changed everything. After working as a background extra — including on Hannah Montana — he auditioned for and won the role of Walter "Flynn" White Jr. on AMC's Breaking Bad at just thirteen years old. Appearing across all five seasons from 2008 to 2013, he brought an authenticity to the role that no casting process could manufacture: his character, like himself, lived with cerebral palsy. He learned to use crutches and modified his speech to portray a more pronounced form of the condition than his own, approaching the work with the discipline and candor that defined him. "I wouldn't be in the position I am in today without my disability," he reflected. Breaking Bad became one of the most acclaimed television dramas in history, and RJ's performance earned him a SAG Award as part of the ensemble cast. But the platform mattered more to him than the accolade. He became a passionate advocate for disability rights and inclusion, founding The Mitte Foundation, serving as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children's, and walking the runway at Vivienne Westwood's Milan Fashion Week show. He continued acting in Switched at Birth, The Recall, The Oak Room, and The Guardians of Justice, while never ceasing to speak plainly about what representation means to those who rarely see themselves on screen. "Disabled or not," he insisted, "everyone deserves an opportunity." RJ Mitte passed away on October 12, 2026, in Brownsville, Texas, at age 34. He is survived by his fiancée Kennedy Suarez, his mother Dyna, and his sister Lacianne. He leaves behind a legacy of courage, compassion, and the conviction that a person's struggles, honestly faced, can become someone else's reason to keep going.

Though RJ didn't play my TV son, I always looked out for him as a young kid on set. He was a sweetheart of a young man and will be greatly missed. This is so heartbreaking, I can't believe it. Thinking of him and his family.

RJ Mitte, my sweet son on Breaking Bad has died. I met him when he was only 14 years old when he was cast as Walter White Jr., a part he played with such joy and enthusiasm. That kid was pretty raw when we started shooting the pilot in February of 2007, but little by little we watched him grow into a really fine actor. He never – ever – allowed [his disability] to be an excuse for anything. All that promise and potential now is such a loss. I'll miss you, son.
