June Elizabeth Merrell, nee Woodson (1920-2022). May choirs of angels guide you home.

June's last few months were spent near family in Stamford, Connecticut, where she died of natural causes in her sleep. Prior to that, she lived for 51 years in New Jersey — first in Chatham and last in Princeton — 41 years in California, seven in Pittsburgh, and two in Utah.

Born in Piedmont, California, June graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1942, then went to work for the OSS in Washington, D.C. (Her stories of the trip with her sister, Helen, from San Francisco to D.C. on the eve of war, with a train full of GIs — and passing through New Orleans — are the stuff of legend!) She returned to the Bay Area and went to work for United States Steel, where she met and married the love of her life, Lewis Charles Merrell (known by all as Charlie). Charlie grew up in Pebble Beach and attended UC Berkeley at the same time as June, although the two didn't know each other then. While living with Charlie in Provo, Utah, she organized an airlift of supplies to a small town in Greece in the immediate aftermath of World War II and became a local celebrity for the feat.

At age 62 – after raising four boys — she began studying for her teaching certificate at Kean College in New Jersey, which she completed three years later. This was inspired by a love of working with children that she’d developed years earlier in Pittsburgh, serving as a volunteer teacher for the Head Start early childhood program. June loved travel and in her seventies studied Ancient Greek history and philosophy at Oxford. In that decade, she also traveled to Morocco and Jerusalem.

As a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and teacher, June was full of love for others, brilliant, deeply spiritual, strong-willed, and in possession of a sense of humor that endured to the end. She was an amazing cook and hostess, renowned for her dinner parties (as well as the cookbooks that memorialized them). She was also a lifelong philanthropist to many, many worthy causes.

She is survived by her four sons and their families: Woodson, his wife Kathleen, and their children Caitlin and Isabel; Gregory, his wife Dee, their children Will and Leigh, their grandchildren Bethany, Cara, Norah, Zachary, Collin, Jonah, and (predeceased) Myra, and Greg’s predeceased wife Ann; Douglas; Patrick, his wife Mary Dee, and their daughter Jamison; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins — including Guy and Sue Newman and family, Judy and Tom Connell, David, Bill, and Joanne Jouris. June is preceded in death by her husband of many years, Charlie (1920-1992).

In accordance with her wishes, June’s body was donated for medical research through the Anatomical Gift Program to Quinnipiac University in Connecticut.

Rest in peace, dearest June.

I am so very sorry to come across news of June's passing . I was going through my address book ahead of sending holiday greetings and realised the last address I had for June was Princeton so did a search and happened upon this post. I met June as young mum of two little ones when we were neighbours in Morristown. She shared my passion for afternoon teas which I regularly hosted at my house , complete with bone china ( despite little ones ) and the essential cucumber sandwiches, scones and little fairy cakes. June was such wonderful company and always spoke very fondly of her late husband and her four boys . We spent many a pleasurable afternoon together before sadly it was time for us to move on back to Ireland - before I left June gifted me one of my most treasured possessions a set of hand embroidered napkins which were monogrammed with the letter S - the first letter of our surname. They had been in Junes' possession for many years but she gifted them to me as she knew they would be used and well loved. I use them exclusively for Christmas accompanied by my grandmothers linen tablecloth which curiously matched them perfectly and I remember them both every time the table is made ready for our Christmas luncheon . Rest in Peace June - as we say in Irish -"ní bheidh do leithéid arís ann" (your likes won't be seen again )

I had the pleasure of getting to know June when my church asked me to visit her. Little did I know that we were to become great friends over ten plus years. I treasure our honest discussions on such topics as faith, family, and the challenges of growing old. She offered support and love to me even when she was feeling overwhelmed. Her love of her children and extended families was a constant. I admired her almost as much as I loved her. I will miss her. She was an angel to many on earth. Now she is an angel in heaven. (This photo is from her 100th birthday celebration.)

Mrs. Merrell was a beautiful woman. She was always so kind and caring. My last memory of Mrs. Merrell was having a conversation about our families, and I told her that I never met either of my grandmothers because they passed away before I was born, and it was something I wished I could have experienced. "I can be your grandmother," she gently replied. That made me feel special. I remember hugging her and seeing her shed a tear. "Because of the pandemic, she couldn't remember the last time she was embraced," she explained when I asked if she was okay. I, too, was moved to tears and expressed my appreciation for her kindness. She will have a special place in my heart and I consider myself fortunate to have met her.

When June came to mind tonight, I decided to check in on her through Kathy, who informed me of her passing. I had just learned of June's passing. She was very kind, strong, caring, calm, lovely, always talked about her boys, and was welcoming, when I had the chance to care for her in Darien last year. God rest her soul.

I loved your mother, grandmother and friend. She was a dear friend of my mothers, Ginny Einspanier. I received such sweet notes from her and have one sitting on my desk right now which highlighted the events of her 99th birthday. I would like to know about any memorial arrangements. She was dear!!!

June was my "official welcomer" upon my 2012 arrival at Windrows. I will always remember her gracious friendliness. Joyce Gardiner
