Enda Bonner
October 1st, 1949 - August 27th, 2026
October 1st, 1949 - August 27th, 2026
Steeped in his community and county — he never stopped working for the people he loved.
Enda Bonner was a proud Rosses man — a politician, sportsman, businessman, and servant of his community whose total commitment to everything he undertook defined a life well and generously lived. Born in October 1949 in Dungloe, County Donegal, he was educated at Gormanston College before going on to build a career and a life deeply rooted in the soil of West Donegal.
In his professional life, Enda was a senior partner at Bonner Gill & Co, a respected firm of auditors and accountants based in Letterkenny. His sharp mind for business was matched only by his appetite for public service. He was elected to Donegal County Council in 1999, representing the Glenties electoral area, a post he held with distinction for two decades until 2019. The high-water mark of that service came in 2006–2007, when he served as Chairman of Donegal County Council — a role that reflected the esteem in which his peers held him. Earlier, he had served as a nominated Fianna Fáil senator in Seanad Éireann from 1997 to 2002, having unsuccessfully contested the 1997 general election in Donegal South-West — a setback that did nothing to dampen his dedication to his party or his people.
Gaelic football ran through Enda's veins. He played for the Donegal county team and was a stalwart of CLG An Clochán Liath, where he served as player, chairman, and vice-president, as well as County Board delegate for Donegal GAA. A cousin of legendary international goalkeeper Packie Bonner, sport was a thread woven throughout his entire life.
Beyond politics and sport, Enda was known as a generous friend to local culture — a steadfast supporter of the Mary from Dungloe International Arts Festival over many years, always willing to lend a hand. He was, in the words of those who knew him best, a man characterised by determination, generosity of spirit, and an absolute willingness to give whatever was needed to the people and places he loved.
At the centre of everything was his family. He was the devoted husband of Phyllis, beloved father of Elaine, Elizabeth, and Patrick, and a proud grandfather to Brooke, Mason, Conal, and Elodie. Enda Bonner passed away on 27 August 2026 at Letterkenny University Hospital, aged 76. He leaves behind a community made richer by his decades of service, and a family that was always his greatest pride.
