John Messer

Deborah (Greyzck) Messer

Debbie was born on October 15, 1953, in Detroit, Michigan, to Larry and Arline (Charles) Greyzck. She grew up alongside her beloved siblings, Faith Monahan and Terry Greyzck, as a bright, beautiful, and determined child. Debbie excelled in all she pursued, earning her associate’s degree from North Central Michigan College before embarking on a distinguished career as a legal secretary and assistant to Judge Barbara B. Mackenzie at the Michigan Court of Appeals, where she dedicated over 20 years of service. Beyond her professional achievements, Debbie had a deep love for nature. She was an accomplished environmentalist, tirelessly working to protect and improve the world around her. She collaborated with the Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council and numerous other conservation organizations, leaving a lasting impact on the environment she cherished. Debbie’s interests were as vast as her heart. She had a passion for music, playing the piano and singing with a lovely voice. She found joy in gardening, planting flowers, and creating a welcoming habitat for wildlife. Even as illness from MDS took hold, she remained deeply connected to the things she loved. Most of all, Debbie was a devoted and loving wife. She always made time for me, filling my life with endless love, joy, and warmth. To many, her legacy will be the incredible environmental work she accomplished, but to me, it will forever be the unconditional love she gave and the happiness she brought into my life. I am profoundly grateful for the 48 wonderful years we shared together after marrying on December 9, 1972. I also want to extend my deepest thanks to the small circle of friends who provided strength and comfort during these difficult days. A special thank you to Faith Monahan and Terry Greyzck for their unwavering support, allowing me to grieve and lean on them when I needed it most. Debbie’s spirit lives on in all who knew and loved her. She was a strong woman, a hero to many, and an irreplaceable part of our hearts. Deborah Yvonne Messer passed away on August 22, 2020, at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital, with her loving husband by her side. She was 66. Though she is no longer physically with us, her love, kindness, and dedication to making the world a better place will forever remain.
