He made every room a safer, joyous, fertile place to collaborate, laugh, and create.

David Kendall was a force of warmth and creativity in American television — a director, writer, producer, and showrunner whose four-decade career shaped the childhoods and adolescences of multiple generations. Born on October 4, 1957, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, David discovered his passion for storytelling early, pursuing it with singular dedication to Wesleyan University in Connecticut, where he graduated in 1979 with a double major in Film Studies and Government, earning University Honors for his short film work along the way. His professional journey began in 1985 as a staff writer on ABC's beloved family sitcom "Growing Pains," where he steadily rose to co-executive producer — absorbing the rhythms and discipline of multi-camera television production that would define his craft. The breakthrough that would make him a legend came in 1994 with "Boy Meets World," the coming-of-age ABC sitcom he helmed as executive producer across all 132 episodes. Serving as showrunner during seasons two and three — widely celebrated as the show's creative peak — David didn't just run a writers' room; he built a family. He remained close to the cast for more than thirty years after the series ended. From there, David's fingerprints spread across the landscape of family and teen television. He directed, wrote, and produced for "Hannah Montana," "iCarly," "Zoey 101," "Victorious," "Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide," "Big Time Rush," and "The Really Loud House" — shaping the careers of young performers including Miley Cyrus, Zendaya, Austin Butler, and the Jonas Brothers in their earliest years. He co-created the sitcom "Melissa & Joey" with Melissa Joan Hart in 2010, running it successfully for four seasons through 2015. In film, he wrote the screenplay for "The New Guy" (2002) and directed "Dirty Deeds" (2005). What set David apart was not only his prolific output — over 400 hours of television — but the way he made every set a joyous, safe space for creative growth. He was the kind of man who would text a friend for twelve years running just to say "you're funny and pretty." His colleagues described working with him as a privilege; those he mentored carried his lessons forward into their own careers. David is survived by his wife, Wendy, and their three children. He passed away on June 2, 2026, after a brave fight with cancer. He leaves behind not only an extraordinary body of work, but a legacy of kindness that those who knew him will carry for a lifetime. Rest in peace, David. No notes.

To say that David Kendall was instrumental in the creation of Boy Meets World would be an understatement. He directed, wrote and executive produced our show, but also helped mold some of TV's most memorable sitcoms, from Growing Pains to Hannah Montana. We are devastated to lose such an important person in our lives, both professionally and personally. We all kept in touch with David over the past 30 years, and are honored that we were able to share his incredible personality with our Pod Meets World listeners. We have lost a vital piece of our family — but we ask that the next time you watch the show, especially seasons 2 & 3 (when he served as showrunner), you think of our beloved Kendall. We love you, David. Rest in peace. No notes.

I'm so deeply saddened to hear of the passing of the wonderful David Kendall. He leaves us way too early, but what a tremendous legacy he leaves behind. I am so sorry for his wife, Wendy, and his beautiful children, as well as the rest of his extended family. I do hope they will take some comfort knowing the amazingly positive effect David had on anyone who was lucky enough to know him.
