Chip Isaac, age 65, passed away on July 31, 2022, in San Francisco in the company of his wife, Angela Palermo, family members and the wonderful, caring staff at UCSF. He died from Multiple Myeloma. Chip lived an exuberant life with love, optimism, and humor. He showed a kind, generous and trusting spirit towards everyone he encountered. Clarence (Chip) Albert Isaac III, was born on October 3, 1956 in Maplewood, New Jersey to Blanche Isaac Perlman (nee Kalmanoff) and Clarence (Clancy) Isaac Jr. A software engineer, Chip was employed at IBM and Sirius Computer Solutions for nearly 40 years. He graduated from Rutgers University with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. Chip loved San Francisco, where he moved in the early 1980s. There he met his wife with whom he built a beautiful life marked by his engagement in the community, with friends and time spent in many outdoor activities and sports. Chip began volunteering at the Zen Hospice Project and the Shanti Project in the early 80s at the beginning of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. He was active for many years cooking and caring for residents. He also served as a big brother in the SF Big Brothers Big Sisters program. He and his little brother Michael Torrey maintained a lifelong relationship, which continued until his death. For over 10 years, Chip led a popular City Guides tour of the Haight Ashbury neighborhood where he and Angela resided in one of the City's most wonderfully painted Victorians. Accompanied by his well-crafted sound track of The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Janis Joplin, tourists were vividly drawn into Chip's homage to the neighborhood he loved, the era of the Hippies and the evolution of San Francisco's counter culture. Chip also regularly distributed food to people without shelter who gathered on the streets of the Haight neighborhood. Throughout the two years of his illness before passing, Chip displayed the same courage, optimism and humor that made him the exceptional person loved so dearly by his family, friends and neighbors over the years. He will be greatly missed. In addition to his loving wife, Angela, Chip is survived by his sisters, Qatana Samanen (Jim), Nancy Isaac (Harvey Grossman); his nephews, Daniel Samanen, Matthew Grossman, Aidan Palermo and Christopher Simpson Palermo; his cousin Candice Wong Kalmanoff and her daughters, Triana and Annalise; his mother-in-law, Louella Palermo and brothers-in-law, Joseph and Greg Palermo. A party to celebrate Chip will be held on January 7 (see Events page). Donations in his memory may be made to Bay Area Border Relief "The Chip Isaac Memorial Fund". Chip's very dear friend Terry Sprague is one of the founders of Bay Area Border Relief and has been doing amazing work supporting families at the border.

Our first memory of chip was when we had just moved into the house across the street and we looked out the window and saw a friendly neighbor waving hello to us. Chip immediately made us feel welcome to the neighborhood and he was the first to stop by and introduce himself. He never hesitated to answer our new homeowner questions and was so helpful when we asked him for advice. His passion for the neighborhood, its homes, and its history inspired us to learn more about our home's history. We're honored to have had time getting to know Chip and we'll always remember his warmth and kindness. -Tessa & Race

Chip, m'dear friend. I cherish that night on Cuttyhunk, when you, Ange, Kathy and I sat for hours under the sparkling Milky Way. You are now out there among those stars...and are no doubt the brightest. And wherever you are, I'm sure you're giving a tour of the neighborhood, and introducing everyone to the real Jerry Garcia. Kathy and I love you Chip. We love you Ange. - Al

Even though I met Chip through Angela, he always found a way to connect and build a unique relationship with me (and eventually with my husband) on his own. He would send the occasional text about sports or just randomly call to catch up. Chip treated us like family, and we were so grateful when he and Angela threw us an incredible engagement party at The Mint Karaoke bar. He even sang "I Got You Babe" by Sonny & Cher with Angela (see pictures below). It was incredible to know him and experience his positive attitude and quirky sense of humor. No one else will ever get me to watch "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" or go on a 2.5 hr walking tour of the Haight ever again. We love and miss you Chip. Thank you for always being there for us. PS..I'm eating beans this weekend just for you! 🤪

I met Chip at San Francisco International Volleyball Club in 1994. He immediately impressed me with his wit and charm and later with his cooking skills as he was in charge of the recipes for the dinners served during the Volleyball Club trips. He was always calm under pressure, very resourceful and he approached every crisis with humor. It was amazing how present and helpful he was to the Volleyball Club founder Mal during Mal's multiple recoveries from cancer and during Mal's final days. During his own illness, he seemed very positive and upbeat. He has became a role model for me in facing my own mortality.

After nearly 40 years of friendship, I have countless happy memories of times shared with Chip, from hang-gliding lessons to protest marches; but the most precious times of all were our walks at Crissy Field these past few years. We had newsy talks and serious discussions but mostly riffed and bantered, and I delighted in his unfailing sense of humor. He honored and applied the improv laws in life by always extending a "yes, and", and helping me believe there are no mistakes. I still can't believe he's no longer walking among us. Yes, you were deeply loved, dear Chip, and we will miss you for the rest of our days.

I knew Chip for only a short amount of time (about 2 years) but when he would see me, he would light up and greet me like we have been best friends for years. Such a friendly and loving human being. He was a leader and an inspiring person. He will be missed and he is loved.
