We will miss Carla's wit, humor and sense of adventure (even if it was from the couch). We will miss her experimental meals (- some delicious, some not), her early or late birthday wishes, her constant singing and we will certainly miss the warmth felt when being enveloped in her hugs.
Honoring Carla's wishes, cremation has taken place. Due to the worldwide health pandemic, a memorial service will be planned at a later date. When it is safe, we will schedule a time to gather and honor her life.In the meantime, please join us in sharing your memories, photos, messages and thoughts in this online memorial.

It’s Christmas Eve. Although I haven’t been to Spokane for Christmas since 2013, I wanted to take some time to honor Grandma Carla. Grandma was the best at decorating her house for the holidays. Rubbermaid containers full of decorations. When she was feeling like herself, she always had a project in the works. My favorite thing about going to see grandma when I was younger, was seeing what decorations she had up. Christmas time she had her nativity scene out, a reindeer, and tasteful exterior lights. The main attraction has always been the star she made out of PVC pipe, wire tape and lights. When she didn’t feel like taking the Christmas tree down, it became a Valentine’s Day tree with pink decorations. One year it stayed up all the way to July, and it became a freedom tree. Each holiday had its own homemade pvc pipe decoration lighting up the block at night. Valentine’s Day: a giant heart St. Patrick’s Day: a giant shamrock Passover: a giant cross We only ever really bonded over crafts when I was little, but I think her creativity lives on. It shows up in the little craft projects I have around the house, with my growing collection of office supplies. Or in all the ways my mom is able to make truly meaningful gifts. Like the fireplace she hand painted nearly 23 years ago, that now occupies my dining room wall around this time of year. I miss you very much, and I’m sad that the new memories I create won’t include the physical you. One thing I do know, even though you aren’t here there are so many ways that you show up.

Like Rachel who posted right before me, I first met Carla when she was living in that tiny travel trailer i spring of 1975. I have no idea how she kept that place so absolutely totally neat and tidy with two children. We walked some rough roads but there was also a lot of laughter and prayer, always prayer. There is so much more to say, but I'm going to have to save it for another post because I can't find the words right now.

Grandma Carla and Grandma Joann bribed me with 10 dollars to learn Coat of Many Colors by Dolly Parton for the family reunion of 2002 or 2004. I listened to it in the back of the minivan the whole way to Quincy,CA determined to have it memorized by the time I got there. I was so nervous to be up on stage, and sing along with Dolly. I stared at Grandma Carla and Grandma Joann the entire time as I sang. They were crying when I was done. I was such a pain that entire trip, but they both had so much patience for me. I’m so great full to have memories with Grandma Carla, so many times we’ve made eye contact where she offers reassurance before I take a leap of faith. We’ve always had our own language in relation to each other. I have lost a person in my life that has truly understood me, and accepted me for all that I am.

The first time I met Carla, I thought how cute she was and what a great personality she had, and how she made you feel like she really liked you. Carla was such a good person. When they lived in Deer Park, they had us over for dinner (they lived in this cute little travel trailer). She fixed us a great dinner; for some reason I remember the cream corn. Then, I remember when the kids were all little, she had us over for an Easter egg hunt at their house, I think I still have some pictures of that day. She was so nice, bubbly, and just basically appeared to be a happy person. If you asked her question; boy, she'd tell you the truth and more..... ha ha! This is how I knew her, and this is how I'll remember her. RIP Carla.
