Vicky Kerr, MD
“Help the life of one person and you can help the community.” – Steven Sawalich
There is so much I could say about my mother. She means so much to so many people. Many know her as the first Black female physician in Rock Hill. She cared for so many patients and families that I still cannot go anywhere without someone mentioning her as their family doctor. She was the absolute best! Our move to Rock Hill was a decision she made with great care and purpose. She wanted children, who looked like her, to know they could be a doctor or anything they set their mind to. For our community, she wanted people to not only see a Black female physician but to come to know and trust her as she worked to heal the community. She wanted to break down barriers and stigmas, and that she most certainly did.
To others, she was their Girl Scout Troop leader, tutor, or mentor. To my classmates, she was the doctor and mom who always came to career day in my class and taught kids about medicine in a fun. She was a band mom and band booster, children's choir director, and Sunday school teacher at various points in my childhood.

Miss Vicky, Though we've only met briefly, I feel the impact of your life through the incredible daughter you raised. Her kindness, strength, and warmth are a reflection of the love and wisdom you poured into her. That kind of legacy doesn’t fade—it lives on in every person she touches, and in every moment she carries your spirit forward. I hope you find peace in knowing that your presence in this world has mattered deeply, even to those who never had the privilege of knowing you personally. Thank you for the gift of your daughter. She is a light, and that light comes from you. With gratitude and respect, Drea

I remember Dr. Kerr coming to our home when I was a little girl. My mama use to babysit her daughter, Celia. Dr. Kerr was like our family doctor but over the years became so much more. I remember one time she brought some frog legs to the house. She said, "they taste like chicken". She was right, they tasted like chicken. She loved to laugh and make us laugh. Her laughter is so jolly and infectious. Celia was like a living doll but also a little sister-friend. See I was the youngest at the time and my older siblings were too big for me to play with. I finally had someone i could play with and boss a little. Just a little though because Celia was a bit feisty at times, lol. Dr. Kerr showed so much concern and sincerity if one of us was sick. She would tell mama and daddy what to do to get us better. I will always treasure the fond memories of Dr. Kerr and Celia. I love yall so much. Andrea Hughes

Dr. Mama Kerr, I just want to say Thank you for being so kind and welcoming to me. You embraced me as if I'd grown up with Celia and had known you my entire life. For that I am grateful. The advice you gave me when I was unsure of things. The free diagnosis when I was sick after you've long retired. You made me feel seen and heard. It's truly a challenge to encapsulate in words your impact on me. I've seen your dedication to your daughter and grand-daughter as well as the legacy you have passed on through them. They are a reflection of your beauty and intelligence. I pray that you've lived your life knowing how remarkable of a woman you are. We Love You in this lifetime and in the next.
