One day long ago, Jesus Christ said that whatever we do for his least brethren, we do for him. I happen to believe those words of his. I take them literally and have concluded that I ought to do something at least slightly radical toward finding him in those whom the world considers lowest and least. ~ Henry Garon, The Wanderers (Orbis Books, 2009) Henry Garon, our father (and father-in-law), was an amazing man in so many ways. Of all the different hats he wore so well, here are just a few that stand out in our memory... Professor: As a natural-born teacher, he delighted in making the challenging study of physics interesting and relevant to the lives of his more than nine thousand college students. Likewise, his TV show made science fun and accessible to kids. Deacon: He shared his strong faith with countless members of the community - be it at mass, with his sermons, or at a homeless shelter. Author: A prolific writer, he published books that documented his family's history, brought together the often clashing worlds of science and faith, and shared real-life stories of homeless men in New Orleans. And to those whose lives Henry touched, here are just a few of his special qualities that will serve as a lasting legacy: patience, humor, humility, perseverance, service, love of family and extended family, strong work ethic, and an abiding faith. If you're thinking of how you might honor our father's memory, here are a few good deeds that would have brought that familiar quiet smile to his face: • donate to your local homeless shelter • count your blessings each day (actually name them out loud, he always said, so you become more mindful of them) • encourage a young person who shows interest in science • talk to a young person about the value of service work And in Henry's own words, "Keep on truckin'!" Henry A. Garon: It was not my good fortune to have met you. But, clearly, you had a positive impact on me. A positive, substantive impact on my life. Your virtuous daughter, Jeanne-Marie, is a rare gem. Specifically, Mr. Garon, she is a living example of a top-quality human being. Her deep compassion and caring -- her unwavering commitment to mankind -- these virtues did not spring from whole cloth. So thank you, sir, for your hand in bringing her into my life and the lives of hundreds of others.

Mr. Garon, also affectionately known to my family as "Uncle Henry", has been a part of my childhood from as long ago as I can remember. When I last saw him a few years ago he reminded me of a funny story of when I was 3 or 4 years old and called him "you old underpants!" when he was joking around with me. I thought it was great that he remembered that from almost 45 years ago and still got a chuckle from it. I was also very fortunate to participate on his Kaledescope TV show as a child - and my boys today get a kick out of seeing us on archived footage on Youtube. I did not realize it when I was a kid, but those were really special times that I will cherish forever. We will miss you Uncle Henry! - Chris Nelson

We'd like to share some of our favorite quotes from Henry's books: "To truly be happy, we must be prayerful, repeatedly asking God to enlighten us." "Time is God's way of loving us out of the past and into the future." "A worthwhile question to ask: To what extent has history been improved by my presence in this world?" "The greatest of adventures is doing God's will at every moment and seeing where it leads you." "Wherever you go today, no matter how you feel or what happens, trust in God's constant presence and guidance." "Ask yourself several times each day, 'What does God want me to do right now?' and then do it." "When moved by beautiful music, it is God we are experiencing." "The losses we suffer in this life can open new pathways to God."
