Mementos

Emery Jordan passed away on October 1, 2022. It is heartbreaking that we will never get to see Emery - who was exceptionally talented, motivated, and intelligent - reach their potential as an artist and scholar. They had many plans for the future that they had been excited to discuss. With love and remembrance, let's celebrate the time we had together.

Emery and I were in a painting class together. We had a lot of great conversations about Octavia Butler and photoshop (totally different conversations!) Our friendship had just started. I am thinking about you today Emery, as we have our final BFA thesis show. You are not forgotten. Love to all your friends and family.

From Dr. Freda Fair: Emery was a thoughtful and dedicated student who was focused and working hard to finish up their undergraduate degree. In their contributions during our class discussions and in their writing, Emery expressed a deep political commitment to black gender and sexuality studies. Emery often shared insightful critiques at the same time as pointing out the humor in many of the media examples we discussed in class which was much appreciated, and generated even more discussion, and brought a warm energy to our conversations and contributed to our ability to build community and laugh together. A talented writer and cultural analyst, Emery expressed an interest in visual art and was excited to be reading and engaging with Audre Lorde's Zami: A New Spelling of My Name: A Biomythography in our class. We will continue to think of Emery and send warm thoughts and wishes to the many communities that they touched at UIC and to their friends and loved ones. Our hearts are heavy with the loss of Emery and also full for having known and engaged with their warm spirit and brilliance. --with love and solidarity, Dr. Freda Fair
