Carolyn Jeanne Ruttenberg, age 57 of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away February 9, 2020. She is survived by her husband, Spencer Steinberg and daughter Hilary Steinberg, both of Las Vegas, Nevada. Carolyn loved writing and performing music, specializing in voice and guitar. She grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah, and began her higher education journey at University of Utah where she double majored in vocal and guitar performance. She supported herself by singing at eateries around the University, and performed at the Park City Arts Festival, Snowbird in summer 1982. After moving to Los Angeles, CA, she transferred to UCLA, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Theory and Composition in 1986. She also met her husband Spencer, marrying in 1987. Carolyn was a recipient of the Gil Rodin Scholarship in Popular Music. Her extracurriculars included the UCLA acapella choir, president of the UCLA Undergraduate Composer's Association, student assistant at the UCLA Music Library, and performing in the 1984 Summer Olympics opening ceremony. After graduating, she worked at the UCLA Archive of Popular American Music special collections library. In 1990, her daughter Hilary was born, and the family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. Carolyn wrote jingles for the radio station KNPR that were aired in the early 1990s, and for many years continued to perform with several local choirs, including as a soloist at First Church Christ Scientist in Boulder City, NV. This online memorial was created to celebrate Carolyn's life. We would love to see friends and family share their photos, memories, and thoughts. ****** Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no services are scheduled at this time. I'm David Luby I was a close friend of her back at the University of Utah. Theses are photos I took of her for album or press and the cast of Hair of which she and I were part of. So sorry for her loss. Her beautiful voice still rings in my memory of her.

I was lucky to be friends with Carolyn in school and although we didn't keep in touch afterward, I still remember her as a very sweet, beautiful and unassuming person. She always had a beautiful smile with a hint of playfulness to it. She was incredibly talented but never flaunted it. I loved watching her play and sing. It is hard to lose such a beautiful soul and my heart goes out to her family.

I have so many great memories of Carolyn! Listening to her sing at Gepettos was a favorite thing to do in high school. She introduced me to Joni Mitchell and Lord of the Rings. She had a wicked sense of humor, a great laugh, a huge heart and wisdom beyond her years. Shine on you crazy diamond.

Just saw this posting and read the beautiful tribute to Carolyn. Junior high and HS was a long time ago but wonderful memories flooded back in an instant. Saddened to read this news, but stronger knowing memories and "moments in time" remain forever...

When I heard of Carolyn's passing, the memories just flooded back. Such a beautiful presence on the planet and a truly compassionate and caring person. I'm comforted by also finding the voices of others from high school who were touched by her. Patty, I, too remember her singing at Gepettos! Thanks for recalling that. I wish her family and friends peace.
