GUNTHER, STEPHEN FLACK   Dr. Stephen F. Gunther passed away in a Covid ICU on December 26, 2020, in Washington, D.C. He was born in Troy, New York, on October 31, 1941, to Carol & Walter A. Gunther, M.D. He graduated from the Albany Academy in 1959 and Yale College in 1963. He married his high school sweetheart and true love, Beverly Elizabeth Burke, in 1962. Dr. Gunther graduated from Albany Medical College with AOA honors, and then completed the Yale Orthopedic Residency Program under the direction of the renowned orthopedic chairman, Dr. Wayne Southwick. He then joined the US Navy Medical Corps and moved to Washington, D.C., where he was stationed at the former Bethesda Naval Hospital and attained the rank of Commander during the Vietnam War. He left active duty in 1975 in order to begin a new position as Chairman of Orthopedic Surgery at MedStar Washington Hospital Center (WHC), where he continued to practice through 2019. He was a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the Uniformed Services Medical School, George Washington University School of Medicine, and Georgetown University School of Medicine.  Under his leadership and Beverly’s gracious mentorship, the WHC Orthopedic Department flourished, and many appreciative students and residents progressed to illustrious academic careers.  He also treated patients at Children’s National Hospital and the MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital. Dr. Gunther had a great passion for teaching, collaborating, and patient-centered care. He won many teaching awards from residents and peers including the prestigious Gold-Headed Cane award at WHC in 2006 for his lifetime achievements in medicine. He was an accomplished orthopedic scholar including national award-winning research on median nerve micro-anatomy.  Dr. Gunther was President of the Eastern Orthopedic Association, Sierra Cascade Trauma Society, and the DC Hand Society. He served as Chairman-Secretary of the Twentieth Century Orthopedic Association.  Dr. Gunther was elected as a member of the Cosmos Club. Dr. Gunther loved the outdoors, and he especially relished skiing, hiking, biking, rollerblading, golf, and ice skating with his family and friends. He enjoyed serving as camp doctor over a 50-year period at Camp Pasquaney in rural New Hampshire.  He was one of the leaders of the GW Ortho Plaster Blasters softball team for 25 years. Dr. Gunther, also known as “Red,” “Big Red,” and “Gunny,” will also be remembered for his many athletic feats and awards. These include his illustrious collegiate hockey career at Yale and semi-pro career for the Washington Chiefs, coaching hockey, winning US Speedskating National Championships, completing over 2 million pushups, and winning five club championships in golf at the Chevy Chase Club. He was a loving family man, a loyal and generous friend, and a most talented, highly skilled, and compassionate doctor.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Beverly Burke Gunther; five children, Gwen Gunther, Dr. Stephen B. (and Dana) Gunther, Elizabeth Gunther Muller, Matthew (and Kristin) Gunther, Cristin Gunther (and James) Head; and ten grandchildren, Nathaniel, Katherine, Madeline, Samuel, Burke, Robert, Margaret, George, Campbell, and Bode. Dr. Gunther is also survived by his sister, Nancy Gunther Sheals and his brother, Dr. Andrew Gunther.

Due to the restrictions caused by the pandemic and consultation with our priest, the funeral rites and memorial service will be observed when it is safe to do so. In time we can celebrate the life and eternal life of Dr. Stephen Gunther, and their families.

Steve Gunther was a medical hero to me. His intelligence, endurance, dedication and equinamitas were of a heroic stature. He volunteered to staff of medical conference I ran at National Rehabilitation Hospital for 20 years and was very generous with his wisdom and humor. I will always miss him.

My dad, who was born on Halloween and died on St. Stephen’s Day, always had an impish glint in his eye. He encouraged me to be independent, analytical, and unique. When I was in middle school, he tried to get me to start a new trend of wearing different earrings in each ear. As silly as that is, I knew he was really saying, “Don’t be afraid to be different. Fitting in isn’t important.” He also modeled joyfully “different” behavior all the time, celebrating his Halloween birthday in costume at work, wearing his favorite ski apparel for decades, and skating in the Washington Hospital Center courtyard on icy days. He also modeled an understated kindness that may be the greatest gift he gave me. I never heard him make fun of anyone but himself and he never tolerated mean-spirited talk. When I worked in his office for a summer, I witnessed how he took his time with his patients, making sure to ask them about their lives and truly understand what they needed. He treated every patient with respect and with his full attention, period. Working at a large downtown DC hospital, his patients ranged from foreign dignitaries to gang members with gunshot wounds. But when a patient was in his care, my dad only saw a human being who needed his help – this was his way of putting his Catholic faith into action. St. Stephen was the first Christian martyr and is known for inspiring other early Christians with the way he transcended the pain of his martyrdom. I like to think my dad followed in St Stephen’s footsteps by inspiring the doctors he trained to treat patients with dignity, compassion, and the highest quality of care. Despite the many, many hours my dad spent out of the home practicing medicine and playing sports, I always felt that he loved me and our family deeply. He truly devoted his life to our welfare. And he loved my mom above all else. She was always the light in his life and his rock. I know he will always watch over her. I will miss my dad’s quiet chuckles, raised eyebrows while telling a joke, and the sound of his slow shuffle, often clacking through golf cleats, cycling shoes, or wingtips. I will also miss his curiosity, sharp intellect, and energy. Even though none of us can be together, we’ve received a beautiful outpouring of love and support from many, many people. Thank you all so much for your comforting words. Despite the separation forced on all of us, we feel the prayers, love and support coming our way. May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you. We love you Poppy! Poppy never walked to the beat of someone else's drum. He was always there for everyone when someone was in need. He paved the path that no one else took, and he made sure everyone else could take it too. I have followed that path many times and seen beauties of the wilderness and everyday life that I never saw before. I always loved spending time with him for the memories that it gave me and for the fun times that I didn't get to spend anywhere else. Losing him was and still is very hard on everyone that he impacted, but I am also happy about how much time I was able to spend with him. The last thing I want to say is a famous quote by Dr. Seuss, "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened." Although it is completely ok to cry, I think that we should also remember all of the good times that we spent with poppy. When we think of his passing, we can smile and not frown because he's gone. -Samuel Robert Gunther, written in loving memory of Stephen Flack Gunther ❤️. Burke Gunther, In memory of Stephen Flack Gunther, Poppy was more than a grandfather to me. When I looked at him, past his face, and into his heart, I saw myself. Not just his habits, how much he ate, and things he said. I saw an ideal version of myself. He was so gentle, patient, and kind. A man devoted to the complicated, yet simple art of kindness. He spread it in the stories he whispered into our ears, his quick flash of a smile, and his day to day curriculum and dialogue. Even the way he talked made me want to listen, whether it was an intriguing story, or whether I just wanted to be nice, because this is how happiness is spread. The urge to reach out and be kind to each other. Poppy was and is my role model. Poppy became a part of me, and when he died, it was my first experience with death. It's like when you lose a toy that you have good memories bestowed in, accept it is a person, and every memory you ever had with them seems to be ripped out of your mind. It was as if there is a hole in my heart. I wish you safe travels in your path to whatever comes next, poppy. As I can imagine Poppy saying,"Live on, and don't see me to soon" which would be followed by his heartwarming laugh.-Burke Gunther I love you, Poppy

I just happened upon news of Dr. Gunther's passing. I was one of the many Navy residents that passed through WHC and we all held Gunny in great regard. Caring but with a wickedly sly sense of humor he was a great mentor. Whenever you needed one of the attendings to "do the right thing" regardless of whoever the patient was, Dr. Gunther was the man. He was one of a kind but truly the best kind. I would like to thank his family for sharing him with us. He lives on through the many young (and now not so young) orthopedists he trained.
