Ronald Hurst

The Leafs treated me wonderfully.
Ronald "Ron" Hurst was a feisty, hard-nosed right winger from Toronto, Ontario who wore the blue and white of the Toronto Maple Leafs with unflinching pride, and who, decades after his last shift, remained one of the most beloved figures in the franchise's alumni community. Born on May 18, 1931, he grew up in the city where hockey was a religion, and he devoted his life to living up to that faith.
Ron's path to the NHL began with the Toronto Marlboros junior team in 1949–50, where he earned a dollar a day plus a streetcar token and skated alongside a future Leafs captain named George Armstrong. Sportswriters would eventually dub him "Brawny Ronny" and "The Try Guy" — nicknames that captured both his physical, aggressive style and the relentless work ethic that kept him from being sent down when his roster spot was in doubt. Standing just 5 feet 9 inches, he made up for every inch he lacked with determination and grit.
After seasoning in the Northern Ontario Hockey Association with the Soo Greyhounds and American Hockey League stints with Pittsburgh, Rochester, and Hershey, Ron earned his full call-up to the Leafs for the 1955–56 season. His debut was memorable for more than one reason — in his first game in New York, a puck struck him in the eyebrow while he sat on the bench. A highlight of that breakout year came when he scored his first Leafs goal at Maple Leaf Gardens against none other than Jacques Plante. He finished the season with 12 points in 50 games and added two playoff assists. A broken leg ultimately cut his NHL career short, ending his playing days in 1960 after 64 games and 16 points in the world's best league.
After hockey, Ron built a successful second career as a stockbroker and in real estate, and he and his wife Beryl settled on a farm outside Toronto near Newcastle. But he never strayed far from the game he loved. In the 1970s, he co-founded the monthly NHL Alumni Lunch in the Toronto area, becoming a fixture and featured speaker — entertaining friends, family, and former teammates with locker room humor and tales that got better with every telling.
Ron Hurst passed away on September 17, 2026, at the remarkable age of 95, the oldest living Toronto Maple Leaf alumnus. He is remembered as a player who gave everything he had, and a man who made every room he entered a little warmer.

Ron was a true Maple Leaf, the kind of aggressive winger the present-day team could use.
