Celebration of Max's Life

Becky Friesland

James Friesland

Event will be in the big barn - parking in the field next to barn

James Max Friesland “Max”, 93, died peacefully at home in Rockport, Maine, on August 10, 2026. Max was a devoted husband and a loving father, with an endlessly curious mind, always digging down into a book, a garden, or the meaning of life.

Born on March 10, 1933, in Lincolnton, North Carolina to Ernest Fred Friesland and Ornie Alberta Friesland (Baker), Max was the second of three sons. His early years were shaped by the poverty of the Great Depression in Appalachia, and he would tell stories of sling-shotting birds for snacks, sharing shoes with his brother, and sledding into the sides of trucks. Later, he became a proud first-generation high school graduate and credited his teachers and coaches for his ability to become more than his beginnings.

In 1956, at age 23, Max set college aside to enlist in the U.S. Army. He trained at Fort Lee, Virginia, before being sent overseas to France. While serving his country, he played Army baseball, competed on the rifle team, and travelled across Europe. When he returned, he completed his degree at Towson State Teacher's College (Towson University) and later earned his master's at Western Maryland College (McDaniel). Although Max had an opportunity to play baseball for the Baltimore Orioles, he felt that teaching was his true vocation. He went on to become a dedicated and highly regarded teacher in the Baltimore County School District for more than 30 years.

Max’s next chapter in life – post-retirement – was, if anything, as adventure-filled and significant as the first, as Max took on the new adventure of building a life with Trish. They met while teaching and married on April 14, 1979. After welcoming daughters Kate and Becky, they moved to Maine in 1988 to raise their family, starting in Appleton and later building their forever home in Rockport in 1999. Max embraced this new chapter in Maine fully. Family life now meant camping, canoeing, fishing, swimming, hiking, sailing, backyard mini-golf, stacking wood, bear prep, keeping the Foss and Friesland children in one piece, and being #1 Dad/Chauffeur.

Looking back on Max's life, it is difficult to put into words what an extraordinary human he was and life he lived. He was a passionate and involved advocate – for civil rights, the natural world, and the other social reforms to make the world more just. He was also an amateur scientist, prepper, “Doctor Dad”, weatherman, sailboat captain, historian, physicist, lifelong Airedale Terrier owner and breeder, woodworker, beer brewer, and winemaker. He tended extensive gardens – vegetables, mostly for practicality, and roses, purely for love.

For all of his hobbies and interests, Max’s greatest joy was spending time with his wife and very best friend, Trish. Whether going on weekend drives along the coast to try new food and enjoy a good beer, doing crossword puzzles, or listening to a book on tape - those were his favorite moments. His commitment to loving her and the life they built together is what mattered most to him.

Max is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Trish Friesland; his equally favorite daughters, Kate Friesland and Becky Friesland and her partner, Heath; his sons, John and Kurt Friesland and his granddaughters, Melissa, Laural, and Liana. He also leaves behind a large and loving extended family, including the Weinstein, Foss, Johnson, and March families, and many, many friends on whom he had a true and lasting impact.

A celebration of life will be held on October 4, 2026 at Harmony Hill Farm, Warren, ME. Please RSVP below.
