January 29th, 1930 - November 6th, 2023
Dr John Jeremy Goring (known as Jeremy) was born in 1930 in Hassocks, England. After schooling at Brighton Grammar School, he gained admission to New College, Oxford University were he read history, later obtaining a doctorate in the same subject. In 1958, Jeremy married Rosemary Blake and they started a family. Charles, the eldest child was born in 1960 and George, Margaret and Daniel followed over the next decade. After a period in the 1960s serving as a minister in the Unitarian Church, Jeremy gained a position teaching history at Goldsmiths College, University of London. He went on to become Dean of Humanities and Performing Arts retiring from full time work in 1987. Following his retirement, Jeremy concentrated his efforts on humanitarian and voluntary services which he continued right up to his transition. He trained as a psychotherapist and helped victims of torture while working with the Medical Foundation. He also returned to the Unitarian ministry and helped to found the One World Centre in Lewes with his wife Rosemary. In 1991, Jeremy and his wife Rosemary got baptised into Brotherhood of the Cross and Star (BCS) after their two sons George and Daniel had suggested they travel with them to Calabar, Nigeria to meet the Holy Father, Leader Olumba Olumba Obu. In the Vestry at 34 Ambo Street, the World Headquarters of BCS, the Holy Father made Jeremy the ‘Leader's Representative for the Western World’, a spiritual position which was never annulled during his lifetime. He was later ordained a Bishop by the Holy Father, eventually becoming Archbishop. Many people were surprised when Jeremy joined Brotherhood and some completely shunned him but he would often explain that the teachings of Leader Olumba Olumba Obu were very similar to those his paternal grandparents believed in and practised. These included vegetarianism (which he was passionate about), re-incarnation, not going to court and avoiding medication. From his mother’s side, came a passion for worshipping God and both of these strands he found consummated in BCS. Jeremy was instrumental in supporting the Father's work in different European countries including Ukraine where he assisted in buying a bethel in the city of Kharkiv. Despite intensive bombing of the city by Russia as part of its invasion of Ukraine, the bethel remains intact. In Spain he was active in supporting the BCS bethel in Madrid and attended events in the bethels in Italy, Germany and France. His last formal international Brotherhood ministry on earth was to the Isle of Patmos in Greece where St John the Divine had the visions that are described in the Book of Revelation.
