It was fascinating and it was comfortable — because it was a place where my breaking news background met this body of scientific reporting skill that I was building up.

Helen Branswell was one of the most consequential health journalists of her generation — a tenacious, deeply curious reporter whose decades of work demystified the world's most dangerous diseases for millions of readers. Born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, she came to journalism almost by accident, graduating from St. Thomas University in New Brunswick with a degree in English literature before landing, as she would later describe it, "serendipitously" at The Daily Gleaner in Fredericton. It was the beginning of a calling she would eventually call a gift. She joined The Canadian Press in 1986, spending nearly two decades reporting from Ottawa, Calgary, Halifax, and Europe before a pivotal shift in 2000 brought her to the medical beat. Everything changed in 2003, when she covered Toronto's devastating SARS outbreak and discovered, as she put it, a "comfortable" intersection between her breaking-news instincts and the scientific rigour she had been quietly building. From that point, infectious disease reporting became her life's work. Over the following years, Branswell tracked every major pathogen that threatened global health: H5N1 avian influenza, the H1N1 pandemic, Ebola, Zika, MERS, and the long, grinding fight to eradicate polio. When STAT News launched in 2015, she joined as one of its founding correspondents, bringing an authoritative voice to a publication built for the intersection of science and society. On January 4, 2020 — weeks before the world grasped what was coming — she published the first detailed U.S. article on a cluster of unexplained pneumonias in China. Her early COVID-19 coverage earned a George Polk Award for Public Service and a Pulitzer Prize finalist citation. Colleagues remembered Helen as gruff on first impression but fiercely warm once she trusted you — a passionate cheerleader for the reporters around her, a recognized baker of considerable talent, and someone who despised reply-all email chains with an intensity matched only by her love of a precise, well-sourced story. She worked until the very end: from her hospital bed, the Monday before she died, she was updating colleagues on new RSV vaccine data. Helen Branswell died on October 13, 2026, in Ottawa, from complications of cancer. She was 69 years old. She leaves behind her sister Brenda and a global community of scientists, public health officials, and journalists who leaned on her for clarity when the world grew frightening.
