I don’t know what else to say other than I was by far the most blessed tenant in the history of 945 Parkside Place. I was in my early twenties in the mid 1980’s, roommates with a fellow world traveler that rarely were at the apt at the same time. The Stull’s quickly adopted me, I was best friends with Grandma Stull, and she would always grab my mail and update me on Mt Adams gossip. Witnessing the memorial for David this past week, I knew firsthand why everyone considered themselves a Stull child, Mr Stull was my second father, and my first father was pretty awesome. I came from a big Irish Catholic NY family, but grew up in an Italian section of Rochester NY so I gravitated to the Dave & Rita on many levels. I will share this: How nervous I was when I introduced the love of my life, Dinah, to David and Rita. David & Dinah spoke for 30 minutes uninterrupted, me nervous that her strong Catholic faith would rub him the wrong way and I was worried how they would connect. At this point, David & Rita had known me (and multiple ex girlfriends) for over 10+ years. David turned to me and said “Gosh Mark, you better marry this girl, she’s the real deal.” Like many of the people that gave beautiful testimonials at Dave’s memorial, it meant a great deal to get his seal of approval. We were married at my longtime parish Holy Cross Immaculata on St Patrick’s weekend in 2000. We moved to the historic Mansion Hill neighborhood of Newport KY the week of 9/11. David & Rita were an inspiration and we renovated our 100+ year old house and raised 5 children. We brought 4 of our children to the memorial this week. I hope they realize what a blessing it was that Dave & Rita brought me into their nest. Rex & David & Mathew: Great job! You made all of us proud. Love you Rita! Will have you over for my Mt Adams Lasagna in the new year. ❤️

So deeply moving to be with all of you to celebrate Mr. Stull's amazing life. Such incredible memories, stories, and mind blowing video pieces. So. Much. Love. And continued love to the dear Stull family as you process and move forward. (And I found a backstage pic with him and some of the cast from the production of Our Town that he directed in 1984.) Sending so much love to you all.

My first memory of Dave was watching him direct a rehearsal of Our Town, that I had stopped by SCPA to see after school. I did this out of curiosity for the rehearsal and particularly because the name, “Mr. Stull,” held significance in our household that included daughters Allison and Tracey Mayer, who attended SCPA from fourth grade to graduation. He was the drama coach and a member of the “ruling class.” As bright and independent as most students were, Mr. Stull was able to reel them in when necessary and they respected him. The students also trusted his willingness to understand the young mind/behavior. He often sought out troubled kids to find out what was bothering them, and to mentor. My daughters remarked he had a wry sense of humor and tone that often made them think of the deeper meaning/lesson behind his words. A few years after my daughters graduated in 1987 and 1988, I became acquainted with Rita and Dave Stull, and for 30 years I’ve been blessed with their friendship. The circle has grown to include their adult children (former SPCA students) and their families. Dave’s influence and kindness is evident in the paths their lives have taken. A fond memory is of Dave’s keen assessment of the leading actor’s skills at a community theater Rita, and I attended with him. When I asked him what he thought of the performance he said, “Well, I can say that she definitely knew her lines well,” he said with arched eyebrows. We laughed, so Dave! Many of us find it hard to think of a world without Dave Stull, but we are so very grateful to have been included in that world. Rest in Peace, dear friend, we will always miss you!
