https://obits.dallasnews.com/us/obituaries/dallasmorningnews/name/jane-pak-obituary?id=15031602 Jane Ellen Riechers Pak passed away at her home in Dallas on August 5, 2021. Jane was born on February 25, 1940, in Hammond, Indiana, to Theodore and Grace Riechers. She became valedictorian of Griffith High School in Griffith, Indiana, in 1958 and graduated with a B.A. in English from Oberlin College in 1962. She married Dr. Charles Y.C. Pak in 1963 and taught middle school English in Kensington, Maryland, in the early years of their marriage. In 1972, Jane and her family moved to North Dallas where she lived the rest of her life. A strong believer in the DISD, Jane held multiple PTA presidencies during her children's attendance in Dallas public schools and served as Cluster Chair and Budget and Finance Chair for the Dallas City Council of PTAs. She developed a particular interest in high-school journalism, editing chapters of the textbook Scholastic Journalism in the early 2000s and organizing the fund-raising auction for the Gloria Shields NSPA Workshop every summer for over a decade. Jane volunteered tirelessly for many other civic organizations, including Camp Fire, the Hillcrest-Forest Neighborhood Association, the Churchill Recreation Center, and the League of Women Voters. She was appreciated for her diplomatic leadership, her focus and enthusiasm, and her clear-sighted and meticulous editing of countless newsletters, directories, speeches, and other communications. Jane was a life-long educator and student who found and spread tremendous joy while observing and gently guiding young minds, exploring the intricacies of good writing, and learning new things every day. She read widely and voraciously, was a decades-long member of three different book groups and a Spanish-language study group, and took an avid interest in history, politics, classical music, theater, and art. She traveled extensively with her husband, children, sister, and cousins, always thrilled with each new fact about each new location. She was an outdoorswoman who led her daughters' Camp Fire groups, ran yearly Camp Fire day camps, and hiked and camped in state and national parks across the country with her family. She loved libraries and museums, and she was a creator herself, an accomplished seamstress and photographer whose beautiful black and white photographs were used in a DISD calendar and a Camp Fire poster promotion in the 1970s. One her greatest joys in her last years was leading an online book discussion group and participating in a writing workshop with her school-aged grandchildren. Jane will be remembered by her family for her devotion and guidance, her intense and abiding curiosity about the world, her commitment to equal rights and civic engagement, her luminous black and white vérité photography, and the countless hours she spent with her children and grandchildren, literally getting on their level to sit on the floor to play and read with them, and constantly encouraging their art, writing, and growth as human beings. Jane is survived by her husband Charles, her sister and brother-in-law Leslie and Jonathan Bass; her children Laura, Gregory, and Marjorie and their spouses; and her five beloved grandchildren, Katie, Emily, William, Cole, and her namesake, Jane. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jane's memory may be made to the Preston Royal Library Friends, c/o Preston Royal Library, 5652 Royal Lane, Dallas, TX 75229. In the memo section of the check, please indicate "In memory of Jane Pak for children's educational programs."

I knew Jane through the League of Women Voters of Dallas. Jane was one of those people behind the scenes who make everything work and the world a better place without drawing attention to themselves. Jane never said anything bad about other people and no one ever said anything bad about her. Really - that's true! The first time l knitted s baby sweater to sell at a LWVD Silent Auction, l was directed to bring it to Jane's house. When l confessed that l was very scared that no one would bid on it, Jane said "I'll buy it". Kindness in action! Fortunately, she didn't have to

Jane was authentic! As real as they come. Down to earth, yet such intelligence! Such vitality for getting involved in meaningful pursuits. One of her greatest talents was convincing others to jump on the band wagon to make this a better world. She had many causes, and I am fortunate that she picked me to help with Camp Fire Girls. Yes, I became a leader and our daughters became Blue Birds, thus I was able to get to know my children's friends up front and close. Jane was such an influence on me that when my granddaughter became a Brownie, I became the Girl Scout Cookie Grandmother of her troop. My family loved all of the Paks when we were all involved at Kramer Elementary School. We moved to the Town of Westlake, but we always tried to keep up with what this wonderful family was up to, and it was always of the highest caliber of activities. It comes from the Top, and Jane and Charlie were model citizens for all of us to try to emulate. Laura, Greg and Marjorie have done that beautifully.

Life is like a journey on a train with its stations...changes of routes...and accidents. This train ride will be full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations, hellos, and farewells. At birth, we board this train and meet our parents, who we believe will always be traveling on our side. However, at some station, our parents will step down from the train, leaving us alone to continue on our journey. In time, significant people will board the train, our siblings, friends, children, and even the love of our life. When some step down, they will leave a permanent vacuum. Others will go so unnoticed that we won't even realize they have vacated their seats. I am so blessed and grateful to Jane Pak for her having been one of the passengers on my own train. The warmth and radiance of Jane's smile instantly drew me to her and held me captivate during all the years I knew her while we worked together in the League of Women Voters. We both loved words and took turns out-wordsmithing the other for various copy going in the VOTER newsletter or the League's Susan B. Anthony Luncheon program. Vaya con Dios, beloved Jane. No one will ever fill your noticeably empty seat on my train. Katherine Homan

Jane was a wonderful sister-in-law for more than 50 years. She was the Maid of Honor at our wedding in Kensington, Maryland. She helped Leslie make her wedding dress. That was just the beginning of what we did together. When our children were young we had beautiful, lively Christmas vacations in Dallas with Jane and family, plus grandparents Grace and Ted Riechers. Jane organized many activities for the holiday season such as browsing in Half Price books or visiting the Kimball Art Museum. Even though we live many miles apart, we had other occasions to get together. It was great to see how all our children matured. We parents were proud of the milestones they achieved. After we became empty nesters, Leslie and Jane would have long telephone conversations about family and books. Jane and Leslie joined cousins Ann and Gretchen for road trips in Texas and looking up the ancestors in the Northeast. We will miss Jane and her warm smile. Thank you Laura, Greg and Margie for a very thoughtful memorial. Uncle Jon
