Souvenirs

We are planning a small memorial service for Milton's family. The family would enjoy your shared memories in the space below.

Milton “Butch” Ernest Borel died Wednesday, December 1 after a brief illness in Roseville, MN. Milton was a true renaissance soul: an artist, an engineer, and a great thinker. One of the highlights of his life was working on Robert Kennedy Jr.’s presidential campaign. In addition to brightening his family and friends’ days with laughter and kindness, Milt devoted his time and resources to support people in crisis in his community and around the world.

Milt attended Northside High School in Corning, NY, and earned his bachelor’s degree in engineering at George Washington University. He lived in several places around the country during his life, most recently settling in the Midwest to be with his grandchildren. Wherever he was, however, his heart was always in the Finger Lakes where he spent many happy years at his family’s cabin on Keuka Lake and his own house on Cayuga Lake. He shared his love of fishing and boating with his daughter and grandchildren, creating new generations of lake children.

He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Susan Borel; his sisters, Sharon Smith and Julie Errett; his daughter, Jennifer Scholte; and his grandchildren, Sofie and Bastian Scholte. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the organizations closest to Milt’s heart: the International Rescue Committee (www.rescue.org) and Sandy Hook Promise (sandyhookpromise.org).

Having Susan and Milt nearby was a great comfort to me when I started at Syracuse 25 years ago (ack!). They had me over or took me old to dinners almost every month, and I always knew they would be there if I needed something. My fondest memories were finding a sports bar with Milt to watch the old Washington Football team on a Sunday afternoon. Back when that was something fun to do! Jennifer and Sue, I'm so sorry for your loss. Milt was one of the best and he will be missed by all of us. Take care!

Milt was a wonderful artist. He created these photo silk screens in the 1970s and we’ve enjoyed them every day since. Our families shared many happy times at the beach in Delaware and at their home on Cayuga Lake. His gentle spirit and terrific sense of humor will be greatly missed.

Uncle Milt was the best uncle. I have so many memories in Vermont, Bethany Beach, Syracuse and the lake house also his visits in Richmond. He had the best sense of humor and always good to me. Lots of love to the family
