Souvenirs

A final farewell to our positive, caring, passionate friend. Mel was always contagiously can-do, super motivated and endlessly passionate about conservation action. She led the charge with conservation dogs, she poured her intelligence, colour, flamboyance and creativity into forging new pathways to tackle the wicked problems. She was humble, selfless - tall with a huge smile.

A force to be reckoned with, Mel will be sadly missed. Strong networks and connections have been empowered by Mel’s life and will continue her good work into the future. We respect Mel for her fortitude and indefatigable and boundless hope for a better future. This is a mosaic of words shared by the Enviro-dynamics team as we reflected on our good friend Mel and her inspirational approach to life. We all feel privileged to have worked and played with Mel in her final years.

We know that Mel will rest peacefully knowing that she has influenced, supported, encouraged, and given her love and passion to everyone who had the privilege to cross her path even for a brief moment. In recognition of her contribution to conservation we are initiating the Melanie Jane Kelly Memorial Fund to assist other trail blazing women in conservation.

We encourage colleagues and friends to donate to conservation through their favoured fund, and/ or through the Melanie Jane Kelly Memorial Fund (hosted by the Landscape Recovery Foundation). This fund will give a leg up to trail-blazing women struggling for funding to implement practical conservation projects. The fund will focus on Mel’s passions for conservation dogs, learning and sharing through travel, and building collaborative networks and partnerships to achieve on-ground outcomes.

Through her life Mel worked and played with many - In Tasmania, Australia and across the world! We invite you all to share your memories, stories and photos of Mel, add some milestones of the projects, activities and happenings, and help document the fun filled and action-packed life of the incredible Melanie Jane Kelly.

In doing this we will meet as friends to celebrate Mel’s life and to inspire others to follow in her path.

I just found out that Mel had passed. I'm shocked! What a loss. I lost touch with Mel when I left tassie 8 or so years ago, but knew her through 10 or so years of NRM work with Kingborough Council, Hobart Council, and the Tasmanian Landcare Association. What struck me with Mel was her passion for the environment and her warm and engaging personality. My condolences to her loved ones. RIP Mel

Words never seem to be enough at times like this. Never the less, it is often the only way we can express the memories, thoughts and feelings we have about someone we have lost. Words which come to mind when I have been thinking of Mel seem to be boundless, as that is how Mel lived life, with boundless enthusiasm. Energetic, dynamic, caring, inquisitive, inspiring, engaging, articulate, passionate, motivated, compassionate, humble, generous, visionary, humorous, lovable, gifted, witty, effervescent, wise, cheerful and fun loving. We know Mel enjoyed a good party, and above all, she was just down right friendly. Many people have used these and similar words in this Online tribute to our dear Mel. Many of these words are unlikely to be used when people reflect on our lives, mine included, but these words are a testament to the positive impact Mel Kelly has had on so many people in her short life. My friendship with Mel goes back 25 years. This young lass with a Forestry degree came into the Forestry Office here at Triabunna and introduced herself. Mel was looking for some forestry related casual work. From memory, she initially did a bit of seed collection and through this encounter, we established a lasting friendship. From day one it was obvious that Mel had a passion for sustainable environmental management, however she recognised that effective change, needed to be done through collaboration, not conflict. Mel had an amazing ability, through her passion, to inspire people about environmental issues, special places, special plants, special birds and animals. Bertrand Cadart recognised Mel’s fabulous attributes, and it was Bertrand who gave her the opportunity and support, to progress the amazing projects and environmental outcomes that have been achieved on the East Coast of Tasmania since she has been here. Mel chose this part of the world to call home. I had the pleasure of working with Mel on many projects driven by her through the Glamorgan Spring Bay NRM Committee and she always had the “Big Picture“ in mind. Even with this Big Picture, Strategic view, Mel was always the first to get stuck in with the real hands on ground work, whether it be weed control, seed collection, tree planting, track building, cleaning up rubbish or building fish ladders, whatever it was, Mel would be in amongst it. One of Mel’s sayings that I loved to hear was “he or she gets it” or conversely “they just don’t get it”. Her summing up of an individual in this way was usually pretty well spot on. Mel was an inspiration and mentor to all who worked with her, particularly her NRM Team. She had an amazing repour with most people she became acquainted with. All of her direct work colleagues have had great admiration for her passion, her dedication and her endless energy, despite the underlying health challenges she has had to deal with over the past 10 years. Mel always gave 110%, a trait which was not always recognised by people who never took the time to get to know her. Her innovative work with her beloved Fonz in weed detection and more recently, pathogen detection, was ground breaking and has been recognised internationally. The passing of Melanie Jane Kelly is a loss to the World, to Australia, and particularly to the East Coast of Tasmania. Wherever Mel has gone, I know she will Kick Ass and make it a better place for all of us who will eventually follow. Thank you for your friendship Mel, I will miss our deep and meaningful problem solving chats at the kitchen bench. You are an inspiration to so many people in so many ways. Rest easy Mel, you have certainly earned it.

Mel was a huge inspiration to me in her NRM role at Glamorgan-Spring Bay. It can be a crazy hard, even Sisyphean, task to redirect ‘municipal’ energies into more ecologically helpful and appropriate channels. I hope some of the change she made there persists. A gorgeous lovely constructive and creative person who should’ve lived to be 100. I wish xx

Only 4 months since we lost Mel but it feels like it could be years, such is the void left by the knowledge of no more Mel time. Only thing to do is to live fully every day like our Mel. Well.... OK, you can sleep in every now and then. I know she would say be kind to yourselves in your grief. Keep smiling, sharing, laughing and dancing in her memory. Love Donnalee

Mel – As a friend and work colleague I always enjoyed working with you over many years in so many forums, be it a committee, working group, advisory group, local government or just a common interest matter to discuss and hopefully solve! Your enthusiasm to make a positive difference to the environment was always a priority for you, which showed in the quality of your work and the outcomes that you achieved. I know you will be missed by many people, but so many memories will remain of your full and accomplished lifetime. Photo at the 2010 National Landcare Awards, Canberra. Maria Weeding
