Souvenirs

The world is better, but we still have a long way to go.

Mary Morello was a woman who never once stopped fighting — for justice, for free expression, for the dignity of every person she encountered. Born on October 1, 1923, in Marseilles, Illinois, a small mining and farming community, she came of age during the Great Depression and drew from its hardships a lifelong commitment to the powerless and the overlooked. She came from mixed heritage — an Irish-German mother, an Italian father — but was raised, as she always said, to believe that everyone was the same. That conviction became the compass of her life. After earning a Master of Science in African and Latin American history from Loyola University Chicago in 1954, she set out to teach and learn across the world, spending the 1950s in Germany, Peru, and Japan before settling in Kenya from 1960 to 1963, where she married Kenyan revolutionary Ngethe Njoroge. Their son, Thomas Baptist Morello — later known to the world as the guitarist for Rage Against the Machine — was born in Harlem, New York, on May 30, 1964. Following her divorce in 1965, Mary returned to Illinois and planted herself in Libertyville, a conservative suburban community, to raise Tom alone. For 22 years she taught social studies and U.S. history at Libertyville High School, and she was, by any measure, a radical presence in that classroom — urging students to question systemic injustice, to look past comfortable assumptions, to demand better of their world. A noose was once left in their garage. She persisted. In 1987, at age 64, she founded Parents for Rock and Rap to oppose Tipper Gore's music-censorship campaign, becoming one of the most prominent voices in the First Amendment debates of that era. She received the Hugh M. Hefner First Amendment Award in 1996. She traveled to the Soviet Union and Cuba on peace missions, advocated against apartheid in South Africa, taught adult literacy at the Salvation Army, made sandwiches for the hungry on her own birthday, and co-hosted a podcast with fellow activist Cindy Sheehan well into her eighties. She was still the most radical member of the Morello family at 100 years old. Mary Morello passed away on July 12, 2026, at the age of 102, leaving behind a son who carries her fire, and a world she worked every day to make more just.

The lessons and truths that I took from Mary and her pod cast partner will forever be part of my Being. I can not express the sorrow I fell in her passing. Our deepest Love and everlasting light to Mary and of coarse to Tom, Who she was confident would carry on with her important work. Sincerely, Timm Brown a 45 year Marseilles resident.

The beauty in Mary’s soul came through in every interaction. From the classroom to the library in our small town to the podcast with Tom many years later, you could see and hear the pure love of people and desire to help all she could. The teenagers she challenged to be better students to the fans who fell in love with her when she discussed which musicians were her favorite in the podcast these past years. Mary changed my world for the better and has inspired my girls to be strong in their convictions and stand up for what is right not easy! Tom, thank you for always sharing your mom with us and guiding other men to know how to treat their mom’s well! My thoughts and prayers for all who have lost a part of their heart to find strength in caring out Mary’s dream for the world. May we all do our part to honor her memory!

My cousin Mary was uniquely special in every way. Never one to hold back her opinion, she lived life boldly, with intelligence, activism and humor. She did what she set out to do. She made a difference. She was also immensely proud of her son, Tom who carries on her fight to make this world a better place in everything he does. Rest in Peace dear Mary. ❤️

Consequence

As a single mother, Mary also shared an extremely close bond with her son and instilled in him the political consciousness that would become central to his own life and music.
