I always wondered how life unfolded for my sweet friend Ian. We knew each other during the time we were both studying Journalism at Humber and I remember him has a kind, sensitive soul. Sounds like he had a full life blessed with family and friends. Sincere condolences to his family.

ALWAYS remembered….NEVER forgotten….FOREVER loved……
Catherine Turnbull
It will be a year, today, that my dad last went in to work. He most likely passed away the week of September 15th, 2020. Dates and anniversaries become very significant when someone you love moves on. You light a candle thinking maybe (hoping), it will send him a direct message of light and love. Wherever he is. Wherever Ian is. Because he is there. And here. You hope you get a sign. I have trouble some days facing the reality of it all. The way he left is what makes me the saddest. And although I accept it; I accept the way he left, because that’s just for some reason what made more sense to him, I am left with great sorrow and pain. I continue to work it out every day. This experience has been enlightening, unique and rich to say the least. It has been a privilege to be his daughter and it continues to be. I often think of him in all sorts of things that happen every day. Things that would have made him laugh or made him inquisitive. We loved to talk about everyday things and often about how the world we live in is absolutely insane. But also, beautiful. My father saw beauty that most people can’t see or feel. That’s what made him special. I was very lucky to have that special spot in his life and in his heart and I hope my existence made a difference in his. I wish he would have stayed longer so I could share the joy I have accompanying my daughter through life. But I like to imagine he is right there with me and somehow, I’m convinced we will meet again. ‘’Grief is when you have love but have nowhere to go with it.’’

Dear Catherine, you do not know me. My name is Momoye. I used to live in the same co-op house with your father for about two years during the late 1970s when we were both young and carefree.(I think Ian had just graduated from Humber College and was working for a cable TV company.) I was feeling nostalgic recently and started Googling old friends who drifted out of my life long ago. Your father was among them. I was stunned and saddened when I stumbled across this memorial page. When I saw the photos, I realized that it was indeed the same spirited, sensitive Ian Turnbull who rented the front main floor bedroom in that semi-detached house in the West Annex neighbourhood of Toronto. I could never forget his smile. Warm memories of Ian came flooding back to me...I have him frozen in time. I think our last visit was when he was in Toronto shortly before your birth. He and your mother came over to my house. I remember that she was pregnant....Anyway, although we made an effort to keep in touch, the weeks, months and years just slipped away and we lost contact with each other by the early 1990s. (Those were the days when people still wrote letters. I believe that I still have one of his letters somewhere.) Even after social media invaded our world, I never got around to looking your father up. Now, of course, I deeply I regret my procrastination. I was moved by your heartfelt tribute, Catherine. Obviously, your father was an exceptionally dedicated, caring parent who will endure forever in your heart. I remember how excited he was about your imminent arrival....My sincere condolences to you, your brother and all of Ian's loved ones. I'll always cherish my memories of your father.

Thinking of Ian with so many memories that come to mind ...... he is forever loved and missed. "Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard but always near; still loved, still missed and very dear". Anonymous
