Proches

George Henry Dorsey III, known affectionately to family and friends as "GeeDee," passed away peacefully on December 31, 2024, leaving behind a life that was nothing short of extraordinary. He was predeceased by his father, George Dorsey Jr., and his mother, Willie Mae (Johnston) Dorsey.

Born on May 5, 1956, in Camden, New Jersey, George's early years were marked by an unwavering curiosity, a love for life, and passions that would define him—chess, martial arts, music, and his fondness for a well-made brisket. Whether it was the funky grooves of Prince or the soulful rhythms of Mandrill, music remained the heartbeat of his life, fueling his spirit and connecting him to the world.

George attended Camden's local schools before heading to Delaware State College, where his life took on new dimensions. After college, George moved to New York, where he began driving a cab and an ambulance, eventually joining the FDNY as an EMT. Over 30 years of service, he rose to the rank of supervisor and trainer, mentoring countless individuals and leaving an indelible impact on the profession. George’s career wasn’t just a job; it was his way of ensuring care, compassion, and safety for all those he encountered.

While George’s professional accomplishments were remarkable, it was his role as a son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend that truly defined his spirit. He leaves behind his beloved mother, Willie Mae Dorsey; his sister, Salimah Pollard (James); his brothers, Alim Dorsey (Wanda) and Murshell Dorsey (Shana); three beautiful children—Rukiya, Kamau, and Daesha; four adored grandchildren; as well as an aunt, an uncle, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends too numerous to name.George's presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the laughter, love, and lessons he shared with those fortunate enough to know him. Though he may no longer walk among us, the vibrant energy he carried will continue to inspire and guide his family and friends. We celebrate his extraordinary life, his legacy, and the countless ways he touched our hearts.

"When I am gone, do not be afraid of my memory.
Say my name without hesitation. Look through old photographs without fear.
Play the videos where I’m laughing, so you can hear my voice again.Don’t shy away from the places I loved, the foods I craved, or the songs that made my heart sing.
Yes, it will hurt—those moments will remind you of my absence.
The grief will cut deep, like a blade pressing into an unhealed wound.
But over time, the sharpness will dull. The wound will close.
The pain will soften into something gentler—something you can hold without breaking. And those memories will no longer speak of loss,
but of life. Of love. Of me.Please, do not reduce my story to the chapter that ends.
Speak my name. Hear my laughter. Play the music and sing the songs I loved. In doing so, you’ll carry me with you—
not as a ghost of sorrow, but as someone who lived,
and still, somehow, does."
