The place of love is everywhere.
June Yvonne (Halmo) Steinfeld, BSN, RN, CCRN, 82, of Fremont, California, passed away peacefully in her home on July 11, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born to Carl and Eleanor Halmo in Lakewood, Washington, on October 19, 1943, June experienced a modest and occasionally tumultuous upbringing. Following her father's death when she was just eight years old and her mother's subsequent illness, she and her siblings relied on one another and their extended family and neighbors. As a close-knit unit, they overcame these hardships together, ultimately forging early adversity into lasting strength
She attended Clover Park High School in Tacoma, Washington and graduated in the class of 1961. In pursuit of a career as a Registered Nurse, she attended the University of Puget Sound in 1961-2 and the University of Washington in 1963 as she worked to achieve a Diploma of Nursing from the Tacoma General Hospital School of Nursing from 1961-4, and attained her nursing license later that year. She achieved her Associate of Arts degree with Highest Honors from Ohlone College in 1983, and attended San Jose State University and Cal State Dominguez Hills to obtain her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1990.
She devoted her professional life to caring for others, as was her nature. She combined clinical skill with compassion, and through labor and dedication soared to positions of leadership. She began her nursing career in 1969 with the El Camino Internal Medicine Group in Mountain View, CA. In 1978 she began to serve at St. Rose Hospital in Hayward, and in 1971 moved on to Washington Hospital in Fremont, where she served a lengthy term as an award-winning Charge Nurse in the ICU, earning the respect and gratitude of colleagues and patients alike. She left Washington Hospital in 1991 to run the daily operation of a cardiologist's office, before her eventual return to that hospital in 1996 to work as a case manager handling patient discharge until retiring in 2006.
She continued her journey in the service of others, spending much of her time volunteering—primarily for the Pacific Stroke Association, in order to spread awareness, provide continuing education for healthcare professionals and resources for stroke survivors, and promote advances in their treatment and care. June was selfless and generous to a fault with her time, energy, and love. Whether caring for patients, supporting her family, or helping friends in need or random strangers alike, she habitually put the needs of all before her own.
June shared a loving marriage for nearly 58 years with her husband, William "Bill" Steinfeld. Together they built a family that became the center of her life. She found joy in gardening and took pride in creating beauty around her home, but nothing brought her greater happiness than her grandchildren. She adored them completely and treasured every opportunity to spend time with them, celebrate their accomplishments, and watch them grow. June’s husband, children, grandchildren, siblings and numerous beloved cousins, nieces and nephews, colleagues, patients and friends will remember her fondly for her unyielding heart, quiet strength, unwavering devotion to family, and lifelong commitment to helping others, as she shed so much light into all of their lives.
She is survived by her husband; her children, Jill, Tod (Yvonne), and Donald "Don/Donny" (Bonnie); and grandchildren, Zoe(13), Caden(11), Elliot(7), and Archer(5) who all miss their beloved “Nama” dearly. She is also survived by her twin brother, Jim (Gayle) Halmo of Graham, WA and her younger sister, Eileen (Len) Goebel of Durango, CO. She was preceded in death by her father in 1952, her mother in 2007, and her older brother, Gerald "Gerry" in 2018.
In lieu of flowers, please donate in her name to the Alzheimer's Foundation or the Pacific Stroke Association. And above all, remember her well and live your life as altruistically as she lived hers.
