Some of the best fishing trips I've been on were with my Uncle Rodney. Sometimes on a party boat going after bluefish, but most of the trips were to the Beaverkill River in New York. There he taught me how to fly fish; and there was something wonderful about being able to drop that fly in a trout occupied eddy current behind a large rock, from across the river, and then watch that trout take the fly. My Uncle Rodney gave me an extra and seemingly magical connection to the natural world that I'll always remember and treasure. My mother (Joanne -- Fran Horton's sister) and I will surely miss him.

I have so many great memories of Rod. I joined him on many Valley Creek stream improvement projects and he joined me on several wonderful fishing trips to Martha's Vineyard and Montana. What I will always remember about Rod is his tireless devotion to those Trout Unlimited projects and his humor. What a brilliant and kind man - I am blessed to have known and spent memorable times with Rod. And let's not forget - he was also a great fly fisherman!

There are so many loving memories we have about Rod. I first met Rod and Fran at St. Andrew's in Audubon. We remember going to their home for cookies and caroling on a Sunday afternoon during Advent. We sang carols, decorated cookies, ate delicious food, had great conversations, and much laughter. It was an event that was always attended by many members of our church. It was wonderful way to build relationships and a great way to build memories. We also did some traveling together. We traveled to the Outer Banks about 5 times over the years. We enjoyed many wonderful activities during those years at OBX. One year in particular we found a very large and heavy rope on the beach. Rod helped to engineer how to move it. We spent hours that afternoon working together trying to move it. Some of us wondered what were we were going to do with it if we were successful moving it. Our travels didn't end there at OBX. We went on several cruises together. I will never forget being on the phone early one morning telling Fran about a trip that we were planning. Rod came in while I was giving Fran the information. She started to tell Rod who she was talking with and why. He said "if the Enlows and Greens are going I don't care when or where they are going we are going too!" That is what made Rod such a good friend. He was always eager to join in and he always brought fun and friendship as well as adventures to all. I now know Rod is in heaven with Frannow. They are enjoying their new home with God and he is watching over all of us. Rod will be missed by all of us here on earth. Prayers for all his family who will miss him dearly. All of us have been Blessed because we knew Rod.

We will always have an image of Rod casting his fishing line into the surf on those vacations to the Outer Banks. He cared about the streams and waterways so that future generations would be able to enjoy the out of doors and gifts of Mother Nature that he relished. He loved to talk about environmental problems and their solution. He and Fran together were a force at St. Andrews Church. Their contributions and service over the years to their church community cannot be replaced. Rod was a tireless contributor to such community organizations as Meals on Wheels. Joy and I will miss Rod’s wonderful , dry sense of humor which was always given away by the smile on his face and the twinkle in his eyes. We will miss those shared times in the Outer Banks with Rod ... and Fran together because they were such good friends to all who knew them well.

I haven't posted yet because the words would not come. Rod and Fran were very special in my life and I am glad that they are reunited. Rod and I liked to kid around with each other. Fran and Ken would chuckle at our joking around! I found this poem that I think Rod would like. Missing them. Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped away into the next room. I am I and and you are you, whatever we were to each other, that we still are. Call me by my old familiar name. Speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference in your tone, wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow, laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Pray, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without effort, without the trace of a shadow in it. Life means all that it ever meant, it is the same as it ever was. There is unbroken continuity, why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am waiting for you somewhere very near Just around the corner. All is well. ~ Canon Scott Holland

It was Grandpa Rod’s birthday a few days before he passed away. I had a chance to play him a piano piece I’ve been working on (Liszt’s Consolation #3) over Zoom, as well as play and sing Happy Birthday with my mom and sister. I’m grateful that the last interaction with him was such a positive affirmation of his life. I will carry with me many fond memories of my time with Grandpa Rod – Scrabble games and fishing trips, hiking in the French alps and tours of his stream projects in Pennsylvania. He will be missed.
