A Life Together: Memories of Nancy
First Encounters
In the summer of 1990, I met Nancy while playing in a band at Jerry Farber’s comedy club on Pharr Road in Atlanta. During a break, I stepped outside and noticed a woman wearing a “carpe diem” T-shirt walking from the parking lot toward the club. She joined us at the front and started talking with the group. We struck up a conversation about Star Trek, growing tomatoes, and other topics typical of people getting to know each other. When our break ended, I excused myself and returned inside to play our set with Jerry. Nancy later discovered I was in the band, and from that moment, our fate was sealed. We would go on to spend the next 35 years together.
Shared Passions and Growing Closer
It did not take long for me to learn that Nancy was a devoted cat lover, caring for three cats of her own. While I liked cats, I had never been a pet owner. Over the years, cats became an important part of our lives. Neither of us was actively seeking a relationship, but our mutual attraction and shared interests brought us together.
In the following months, our bond deepened as we enjoyed typical dating activities, such as attending events, watching fireworks, and visiting Six Flags. By the fall, Nancy moved into my house, and we began living together. The following spring, we got engaged and made plans to marry in June—exactly one year and one day after we first met.
Building a Life Together
The first year was challenging, as we were both starting anew and had very little. Fortunately, my house provided a place to live. When the new year arrived and times were tough, Nancy encouraged me to take charge and find a new job. Her support and motivation led me to pursue a career in the computer software industry.
Nancy continued freelancing as a technical illustrator, which provided stability until my new job began. With things progressing quickly, we decided to get married. In June 1991, exactly one year after we met, we married at a Chinese restaurant in Atlanta.
Years of Happiness
We shared a happy life, making new friends through our mutual love of aerobics and travel. Nancy took over managing the household while I focused on advancing in my career. Life settled into a comfortable rhythm, and we enjoyed our time together.
Facing Challenges
Our happiness continued with family and friends until around 2001, when Nancy began to feel weak and fatigued. She was diagnosed with lymphoma and underwent treatment. After recovering, she enjoyed a period of good health, but in 2014, she developed lung cancer and had one of her lung nodes removed. She continued with treatments as needed and was able to maintain a relatively normal life.
Later Years
From then on, Nancy and I led a quiet life. We enjoyed movies, senior university, water aerobics, and spending time with friends. About a year ago, Nancy’s health declined due to a paralyzed vocal cord, which led to lung problems and eventually an infection that turned into pneumonia.
Farewell
Nancy will be deeply missed by me and the cats. It is comforting to know that she is now free from distress and has passed on peacefully.
