Please smile when you think of me; My body’s gone, that’s all. — À Tout le Monde by Megadeth
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of John David Hazelwood, who entered a galaxy far, far away on March 31, 2026, in Cherry Grove, South Carolina. Born on January 26, 1967, in Danville, Virginia, John was a remarkable man with a contagious smile and calming spirit, whose life was a testament to kindness, generosity, and a profound love for his family and friends.
John was widely known in the field of land surveying, serving both the private sector and culminating in a distinguished 29-year tenure with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, where he retired in 2024. John’s brilliance and ingenuity earned him deep respect in his career, but it was his heart that left the greatest mark. Always ready to lend a hand or share his vast knowledge, his approachable nature, wit, and kind personality turned colleagues into lifelong friends.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, John was a devoted family man. He is survived by his beloved wife, Andrea Hazelwood; his daughter Raven Baulding; his son Jonah Hazelwood; his bonus son, Phillip Baulding; and his cherished grandchildren, Maverick and Madelyn Baulding. While John is reunited with his father, Robert 'David' Hazelwood, and other loved ones who preceded him; he will be held forever in the hearts of his mother and step-father, Connie and Ryland Jones, and a large, loving circle of extended family and friends.
John found his greatest joy in life’s simple, soulful pleasures. Whether he was searching the shoreline for shark teeth, casting a line in the water, or wandering quiet dirt roads and wooded paths, he felt most at home in nature. A talented and versatile musician, John played several instruments with ease. He was also an animal lover, and anyone who knew him knew he had a special fondness for his cats. He was a devoted fan of the Wolfpack and never missed a NASCAR race, but nothing brought him more happiness than spending time with the people he loved.
An Evening of Memories of John: Family and friends are invited to gather and reminisce on Friday, April 17, 2026, at 2141 Moir Mill Rd., Reidsville, NC, from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM. An open invitation to all; no RSVP is needed. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those wishing to honor John's legacy consider making a donation to a Safe Haven for Cats, NC.
John David Hazelwood's legacy of love and generosity will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be profoundly missed but eternally remembered.
